Registered Nurse - Med/Surg

Location: Olney, Illinois
Employment Type: Clinical Nursing
Shift: Night (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours (12-hour shifts)
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Summary

• Perform nursing duties within the scope of med/surg unit practice.
• Conduct initial patient assessments upon admission and develop individualized care plans.
• Implement and modify nursing interventions and patient care procedures based on ongoing evaluation.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of nursing care.
• Administer therapies including IV access (peripheral and central lines), IM and SQ injections.
• Assist with unit procedures and equipment such as chest tube management, sequential compression devices, blood glucose monitoring, PCA machines, thoracentesis, paracentesis, TPN, thrombolytic therapy, kangaroo pump, and central line insertion.
• Respond effectively to emergency situations across all age groups (neonatal to geriatrics).
• Promote patient satisfaction through patient rounding, bedside reporting, and use of patient whiteboards.
• Delegate tasks to healthcare team members and validate task completion.
• Administer medications following the "5 Rights" (right patient, medication, route, dose, time).
• Ensure patient safety by enforcing fall precautions, pressure ulcer prevention, isolation precautions, and ambulation safety.
• Use critical thinking and nursing judgment to identify and act on changes in patient condition.
• Communicate effectively within the interdisciplinary healthcare team to coordinate care and ensure patient safety.
• Maintain a positive, professional attitude to foster a healthy work and healing environment.

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Illinois.
• Minimum 1 year of Med Surg nursing experience within the last year.
• BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Required Skills

• Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) administration.
• Thrombolytic therapy.
• Emergency response skills.
• Patient rounding and bedside reporting.
• Order transcription and medication administration.
• Fall precautions, pressure ulcer prevention, isolation precautions, and patient ambulation safety.
• Critical thinking and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Education

• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) required.
