Registered Nurse - Emergency Department

Location: Sitka, Alaska
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights/Days/Variable

Job Summary

  • Provide nursing care for patients of all ages, independently managing assignments based on provider orders, standards of care, and hospital policies.
  • Make clinical decisions independently during shifts and maintain accountability for all actions.
  • Supervise and delegate tasks to CNAs/Techs.
  • Deliver safe, therapeutic, and efficient care for patients with multisystem diseases or treatment complications.
  • Administer age-specific medications and therapeutics accurately.
  • Coordinate patient care activities with physicians and healthcare team members.
  • Educate patients and families about tests, procedures, disease processes, and coping strategies.
  • Document patient assessments, care plans, progress, and responses thoroughly and accurately.
  • Participate in patient discharge planning and aftercare instructions.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
  • Assist in orientation and mentoring of new staff, travelers, and students.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and unit goal setting.
  • Comply with all mandatory training, competency checks, and certification renewals.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Valid, current, full, and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Alaska at time of application.
  • One year of clinical nursing experience preferred.
  • Prior experience in Emergency Department or specialty area preferred.

Certifications

  • BLS and PALS required upon hire.
  • ACLS certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • TNCC/ATCN and NRP certifications required depending on specialty area, to be obtained within first 6 months and renewed bi-annually.

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of nursing care principles, diagnosis, and nursing processes including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Ability to recognize and respond promptly to emergent patient conditions and adverse signs/symptoms.
  • Familiarity with general pharmaceuticals, including effects and side effects, especially those used in emergency nursing.
  • Proficiency in operating and monitoring medical equipment such as defibrillators, monitors, beds/lifts, and specialty equipment (e.g., chest tube setup, EKG machines, ventilators).
  • Ability to assist with emergency procedures (intubations, arterial line setup, arterial blood gas puncture, thoracentesis, lavage).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for accurate documentation and effective interdisciplinary communication.
  • Leadership skills to provide guidance and work cooperatively with healthcare team members.
  • Ability to implement evidence-based nursing interventions and recognize complications early.

Additional Information

  • Must have or obtain flu vaccination.
  • Start date will be no less than 5 weeks after fingerprint cards are processed.
  • Applicants must live at least 50 miles away from the facility location to be considered.
  • Housing and flights are not provided.

This position requires a highly skilled and independent nurse capable of managing complex patient care in an emergency setting while collaborating effectively with the healthcare team.
