ICU Registered Nurse (RN) - Nebraska, Kearney
Job Details
- Specialty: ICU RN
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Days (06:30 - 18:30)
- Hours per Day: 12
- Hours per Week: 36
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- Holiday Requirement: Minimum of 2 holidays during contract
- Orientation: 1 shift of unit/department-specific orientation
- Return to Office (RTO): Required within 7 days or less from contract start; no additional RTO approved
Unit Information
- Unit Type: ICU
- Number of Beds: 33 beds (average daily census 16)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2-3 for adults
- Common Patient Diagnoses: Trauma, cardiac issues, overdose/substance abuse, adult sepsis, post-stent, pacemaker placement, stroke, vascular cases, renal failure, heart failure, respiratory distress
- Floating Assignments: Typically Progressive Care Unit (PCU), occasionally MedSurg with ratios of 1:4 or 1:5
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs are required to titrate drips including cardiac drips, insulin, and sedation
- RNs must read, interpret, and document telemetry strips (monitor brand: GE)
- RNs troubleshoot respiratory equipment from nasal cannula to ventilators
- Nurse aides and healthcare support techs assist based on census and volume
Scheduling & Policies
- Self-scheduling available for core staff and travelers; block scheduling generally not approved except possibly for weekends only
- No duo scheduling or shared car arrangements allowed
- If placed on call and called back in, must arrive within 30 minutes
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
- RN candidates must pass a 90% score on a pass/fail open book exam during orientation or face contract termination
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Current RN license
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
- Valid driver’s license required at time of submission (used to verify candidate is within 50-mile radius)
Additional Requirements
- Candidates may not be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with a specific large healthcare system
- Fingernail policy strictly enforced
- Radius rule: candidate must live within 50 miles of the facility
This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs comfortable with critical care drips, telemetry monitoring, and a fast-paced trauma and cardiac patient population.
