Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Labor & Delivery

Contract Length

• 13 weeks

Unit Details

• Birthing Center / Mother Baby unit
• 34 total L&D beds
• 2 OR suites for C-sections
• 2 triage beds
• 14 postpartum beds
• Approximately 150-180 births per month (2,133 deliveries in 2022)
• Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:2 in L&D, 1:3-4 in couplets (mother-baby)

Required Qualifications

• Active Washington RN license (pending license acceptable; temporary license takes ~4 weeks)
• BLS, ACLS, and NRP certifications required
• Minimum 2 years of L&D nursing experience (1 year considered if candidate has multiple prior travel contracts)
• Prior travel experience required (NO first-time travelers)
• Must have LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum) experience
• Comfortable attending deliveries independently and circulating in C-sections
• Able to assist with catching and transitioning newborns
• Able to titrate drips such as Magnesium, Pitocin, and Insulin

Orientation & Scheduling

• Unit-specific orientation: 8 hours compliance training, 8 hours EPIC training, plus 2-3 twelve-hour shifts on unit
• Night shift, 12 hours per shift, 36 hours per week
• Block scheduling available upon request
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend (days: Sat & Sun; nights: Fri & Sat)
• Holiday rotation with permanent staff
• Standby call with 45-minute response time when placed on standby

Unit Environment & Support

• Free charge nurse role on both shifts
• One surgical tech available 24/7
• Patient care assistant with clerical duties on each shift
• 24/7 in-house OB/GYN hospitalist and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) in nursery
• 24/7 OB anesthesia provider with call room on unit
• Respiratory therapist typically assigned to family birth
• Tele/Monitor techs available for PACU after C-section; RNs read their own strips
• Electronic fetal monitoring system: Centricity-perinatal

Patient Population & Care

• Patients 33 weeks gestation and above
• Common diagnoses: high risk pregnancies, preeclampsia, diabetes, psychosocial issues, positive illicit substance use
• Follow AWHONN guidelines for nurse-to-patient ratios

Additional Unit Policies

• Surgical hand scrub policy:

  • Remove all jewelry from hands and forearms
  • No artificial nails or nail enhancements (tips, resin wraps, acrylics, gels, nail art, etc.)
  • Natural, clean, well-manicured fingernails no longer than ¼ inch beyond fingertip
  • No open lesions or breaks in skin integrity on cuticles, hands, or forearms
• Scrubs and locker provided

Expectations & Notes

• Manager values quality work and provides feedback to travelers
• Travelers must be adaptable to unit workflows, policies, and procedures
• Labor travelers must also function in postpartum with routine mother and baby competencies
• No floating outside the department; no floating to NICU
• Able to transition babies and attend low-risk deliveries
