Description
Registered Nurse (MedSurg Level 8 - 23)
Location: Weirton, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Patient Information
- Unit size: 48 beds
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Days: 1:5-7
- Nights: 1:6-8
- Common patient diagnoses: Pneumonia, UTI, altered mental status, GI bleed, alcohol withdrawal, falls/weakness
- Charge nurse coverage:
- Day shift: 2 charge nurses, both take patient assignments
- Night shift: Usually 2 charge nurses; if only 1, they do not take patient assignments
- Patient care tech (PCT) ratio: Approximately 1:10-12, may be higher
- PCT duties: Vitals, blood glucose monitoring, EKGs, applying heart monitors, bathing, feeding, toileting, turning, and positioning
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- RN responsibilities include:
- Titrating drips (heparin, bumex, lasix) except cardiac drip titration
- Monitoring respiratory equipment (BiPAP, CPAP, high flow O2) but respiratory therapists (RTs) handle treatments and checks
- No requirement to read or interpret telemetry strips; telemetry tech monitors and alerts staff as needed
- Floating: May be floated to other MedSurg, MedSurg-Telemetry, or Intermediate Care units for lower acuity patients
- Scheduling:
- 12-hour day shifts (7am-7pm)
- No self-scheduling or block scheduling; schedule made by manager with some accommodation for time off requests
- Rotating shifts typically arranged as 2 weeks days followed by 2 weeks nights
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday rotation may apply for RNs
Required Qualifications
- Active RN license
- Minimum 1 year of MedSurg nursing experience (higher experience requirement takes precedence if conflicting)
- BLS certification required
- Must comply with a 50-mile radius rule for candidate submissions
- Must disclose any licensing issues at time of submission
- First-time travel nurses are accepted
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation includes:
- 1 day with educator/computer system training
- 1 day preceptorship on the unit
- Orientation covers 12-hour day shifts and weekend scheduling
Additional Information
- Dress code: Navy blue scrubs for RNs
- PCTs wear ceil blue scrubs; secretaries wear black and pink
- No call or standby requirements
This position offers a structured environment with clear nurse-to-patient ratios, defined responsibilities, and support from ancillary staff such as respiratory therapists and telemetry technicians. It is suitable for RNs with at least one year of MedSurg experience, including those new to travel nursing.
