Description

Registered Nurse (Labor & Delivery / Float MedSurg)

Location: Hettinger, North Dakota
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work primarily in Labor & Delivery with floating to Med-Surg approximately 80% of the time when no laboring patients are present.
  • Labor & Delivery unit includes 3 L&D beds and 3 postpartum beds.
  • Approximately 30 births per year (rural setting with low birth volume).
  • Couplets care model: RNs manage both mother and baby through labor, delivery, and postpartum in the same room.
  • Common patient diagnoses include active labor, elective inductions, and low-risk pregnancies (37 weeks+).

Schedule & Hours

  • 12-hour shifts, rotating day and night.
  • 36 hours per week.
  • Self-scheduling with managerial support from 7 AM to 7 PM.
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend or potentially every third weekend.
  • Holiday requirement: every other holiday.
  • May be placed on call/standby for additional shifts due to low census.

Clinical & Staffing Details

  • No charge nurse; collaborative RN team environment.
  • No nurse aides or surgical techs available.
  • OB/Neonatologist and anesthesia available with a 15-minute response time (not in-house 24/7).
  • Respiratory therapy equipment limited to PRN nasal cannula during labor only.
  • No telemetry or monitor techs; electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) uses paper charting.
  • Drips used include Pitocin and Magnesium (Magnesium only for patient transfers). RNs titrate drips per policy.

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Current RN license.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) from AHA.
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program).
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support).

Orientation & Training

  • Unit-specific orientation includes 1 day and 1 night shift on the unit for acclimatization and training.
  • Must be able to float to Med-Surg or ER every other week and serve as primary L&D nurse when needed.

Additional Information

  • Scrub color is flexible; any color or pattern allowed. Closed-toe shoes required.
  • Facility is rural with low birth volume; floating to Med-Surg is a significant part of the role.
  • Collaborative team environment with flexibility in scheduling.
