Description

Registered Nurse – Labor & Delivery / Mother Baby

Location: Buckhannon, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week


Unit Overview

  • Labor & Delivery / Postpartum unit with 8 total L&D beds (4 labor, 4 postpartum) and nursery with 8 crib capacity.
  • Approximately 350 births per year (25-30 per month).
  • 2 labor beds can be used as triage beds.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:1 for L&D, 1:4 for postpartum couplets.
  • Use of Centricity Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM) system and EPIC EMR.
  • Scrubs provided.

Required Certifications & Skills

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM)
  • Ability to circulate C-sections if OR team is delayed (C-section experience required).
  • Comfortable floating to MedSurg or ER as needed, while maintaining readiness for deliveries.

Staffing & Support

  • Charge nurse role reserved for permanent staff, not travelers.
  • OB Tech support available during day and evening shifts; none overnight.
  • Respiratory Therapist available 24/7, providing EKGs, breathing treatments, ABGs, vent settings in CCU.
  • PICC nurse available; no dedicated IV team.
  • Pharmacy available until 5:30 pm; after-hours support via external hospital system.
  • OB/Neonatology providers and nurse midwives are on-call; midwives may stay in-house if requested.

Work Schedule & Requirements

  • At least 2 weekends per month required (Friday/Saturday nights and Saturday/Sunday days count as weekends).
  • Potential on-call shifts due to census fluctuations; frequency varies from rare to weekly.
  • Participation in holiday rotations with permanent staff.

Patient Population & Care

  • Care for patients 20 weeks gestation and up, including high-risk scenarios such as multiples, VBACs, magnesium sulfate, insulin, and pitocin management.
  • Unit primarily L&D but may occasionally receive overflow from MedSurg or CCU depending on bed availability and COVID status.

Additional Requirements

  • COVID-19 vaccination required (2 doses Moderna/Pfizer or 1 dose J&J) unless approved exemption for medical or religious reasons.
  • Must submit a copy of an unexpired driver’s license with application.
  • Must be within a 50-mile radius of the facility.

Orientation

  • Unit-specific orientation with 2-3 shifts alongside a preceptor.

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license in good standing for West Virginia.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in Labor & Delivery / Mother Baby specialty.
