Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – PACU
Location: Wheeling, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Position in Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) covering both inpatient and outpatient recovery areas.
- Work includes recovery of general, neuro, thoracic, interventional, radiology, and simple procedure cases.
- ICU patients are recovered in PACU except for open heart surgeries (which go directly to ICU).
- Floating required across inpatient and outpatient PACU, surgery center, and anesthesia clinic.
- Shifts predominantly 12 hours (3 shifts per week), with possible 8 or 10-hour shifts.
- Staff expected to stay until cases are completed; schedule flexibility required.
- Weekend call: one 24-hour weekend shift per month (7am-7am).
- Additional call: two overnight call shifts per month (11pm-7am).
- Holiday call rotation included (24 hours, 7am-7am).
Unit Details
- PACU inpatient: 7 bays
- PACU outpatient: 15 bays
- Surgery center: 14 bays
- Anesthesia clinic: 6 rooms
- All areas blend Phase 1 and Phase 2 recovery.
Certifications & Licenses
- Required:
- Current RN license for West Virginia
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) knowledge expected.
- Must provide a copy of an unexpired driver’s license with submission.
- Licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission.
Clinical & Operational Information
- Telemetry skills required: ability to read and interpret cardiac strips.
- Ventilator management handled by Respiratory Therapists (RT) 24/7.
- Pharmacy services available in-house 24/7 with Pyxis system.
- Charge nurses assigned to each area and take patient assignments.
- Nurse aides (UA2s) support units; cross-trained as unit receptionists.
- Scrubs provided except in anesthesia clinic (staff must bring navy blue scrubs).
Orientation & Training
- Floor-specific orientation: 2-3 shifts.
Work Environment
- Electronic Medical Record system: Sunrise.
- Typical nurse-to-patient ratios for Phase 1 and Phase 2 recovery.
- No hospitalist or intensivist in-house.
- No IV team on site.
Additional Notes
- Must be within a 50-mile radius for submission.
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
- Weekend and holiday call coverage is mandatory as part of the role.
