Description
Registered Nurse (ER) - Night Shift
Location
- Mount Ayr, Iowa
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Shift & Hours
- Night shift: 7pm to 7am
- 36 hours per week
- Every other weekend or every third weekend depending on unit needs
- Holiday work required if holidays fall within contract and are not part of RTO
- Weekend-only schedules may be considered
Department & Work Environment
- Emergency Room (ER) with a 4-bay setup (including pediatric, well women, and psych areas)
- Trauma Level: Critical Access Hospital (CAH)
- Average ER patient volume: 6-7 patients per day
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3-4 in ER; EMS assists with triage if more than 2 patients
- No separate triage area; no in-house 24/7 security (911 response only)
- Psych/seclusion rooms available
- Floating required to MedSurg when ER census is low; MedSurg is busy and appreciates help
- MedSurg float involves sitting at MedSurg nurse station and managing ER patients coming from MedSurg
Patient Care & Procedures
- Common diagnoses: general ER cases, urgent care, cardiac events, traumas (farming, boating, construction accidents), falls, MI, strokes
- Critical care drips commonly used
- RNs perform labs, EKGs, and ABGs (ABG not mandatory)
- Some nurses trained in PICC/Midline and ultrasound-guided IV insertion
- Respiratory Therapy coverage: RT on-site 8am-4:30pm M-F; paramedics or MD intubate after hours
- RNs troubleshoot CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow equipment; vented patients are minimal and transferred out after intubation
- X-ray available nearby; lab and x-ray on-call nights and weekends with ~30-minute response time
- No monitor techs; RNs monitor telemetry
Orientation & Scheduling
- Day 1: Orientation with HR and department for EMR training and general orientation
- Day 2: Full shift orientation with preceptor
- Scheduling managed by Director of Nursing using a digital platform
- Bedside report expected at shift change
- Dress code: dark-colored scrubs (black pants preferred; navy or maroon acceptable)
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- TNCC certification required; PALS preferred
- Minimum 2 years of ER nursing experience required
- Previous travel experience required (minimum 2 prior travel assignments)
- Ability to learn and use a smaller, less common EMR system is essential
Additional Notes
- No call or standby requirements
- Charge nurse shared with MedSurg; no house supervisor on site
- Support staff includes EMTs, paramedics, nurse aides, and secretaries
- Mid-level providers cover ER and MedSurg, backed by MD available by phone and within 2 miles of facility
