Description
Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Provide nursing care for adult and geriatric general medical/surgical patients (daily census ~43).
- Possible care of COVID-19 patients.
- Assigned to Inclement Weather Team and Storm/Hurricane Team; may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters.
- Float to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatient holding.
- Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6-7.
- Shift: 12-hour nights (18:45 – 07:15), 36 or 48 hours per week accepted.
- Weekend assignment: every other weekend.
- Must work holidays.
- Charge nurse role required for night travelers.
- Unit orientation: 24 hours.
- Unit systems: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR communication.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
- Minimum 2 years of medical-surgical nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Experience in charge nurse roles.
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification.
- Charge nurse experience.
Clinical Skills & Procedures
- Management of insulin and heparin drips.
- Wound VAC dressing changes.
- High flow oxygen therapy.
- Occasional short-term BiPAP respiratory support (no additional training required).
- No PCU-level patients on this unit.
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- Floating to similar units and alternate care locations as needed.
- Call required if assigned to prescheduled call shifts.
- Must be able to work holidays and every other weekend.
- Assigned to Inclement Weather Team and may be required to report during severe weather or disaster events.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background check within 6 months prior to start.
- Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months prior to start.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start; additional documentation required if past positive TB.
- Required immunizations and titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (or signed declination if applicable).
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
- Physical exam and references per travel agency standards.
- Completion of medication safety training and annual compliance training.
- Completion of facility-specific education modules and orientation checklists.
- Photo ID for badge creation required prior to start (passport-style photo on white background).
- Must complete corporate ID setup and log into required learning platform within 24 hours of receiving credentials.
Additional Notes
- Scrubs: Navy color required; not provided by facility.
- No return-to-office (RTO) after booking allowed; excessive call-offs or RTO may result in cancellation.
- Contract length flexible between 13 to 26 weeks.
- No overtime billed until after 48 hours if working 48-hour weeks.
This position is ideal for a medical-surgical RN with EPIC experience who is comfortable working night shifts, managing drips, and participating in emergency response teams.
