ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Charlotte, North Carolina
Job Summary
- Position: ICU Registered Nurse (Neuro ICU focus)
- Location: Charlotte, NC
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Night shift, 3x12 hours (18:45 - 07:15), 36 hours per week
- Patient Population: Comprehensive Stroke Center with high volume of stroke patients (ischemic, hemorrhagic, SAH), SDH, craniotomies, carotid stents/endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, myasthenia gravis, and post-neurosurgery care.
Unit & Patient Care Details
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: Typically 2:1, may flex to 3:1 during high census.
- Average Daily Census: 11-12 patients.
- Float Requirement: Yes.
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend.
- Call Requirement: None.
- Orientation: 24 hours (2 days or 2 nights).
- Dress Code: Navy blue & white scrubs.
- Unit Systems: Pyxis, EPIC, SBAR.
- Special Equipment: External ventricular drains (EVD), Lumbar drains, Camino (ICP monitoring), LICOX, NICOM, Arctic Sun.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, with ICU experience within the last year
- One completed travel assignment
- ACLS certification
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience in an Acute Care setting
- Experience in an Inpatient setting
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Central line care and management
- Continuous IV sedation administration
- Experience with external ventricular drains (EVD)
- Lumbar drain experience
- ICP monitoring experience
- Post-neurosurgery patient management
Patient Diagnoses & Procedures
- Stroke (ischemic, hemorrhagic including SAH)
- Subdural hematoma (SDH)
- Craniotomies
- Carotid stents and endarterectomies
- Aneurysm coiling and clipping
- Seizures and depth electrode monitoring
- Myasthenia gravis
- Use of drains: EVDs, lumbar drains, hemovacs
- ICP monitoring with Camino device
Compliance & Onboarding Requirements
- Background Checks: Required within 90 days of start, including local county, federal court, national criminal database, DOJ sex offender search, and education verification.
- Health Documents:
- Physical exam within 1 year (or 30 days if past positive TB)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray per protocol
- Fit mask testing (N95 or PAPR training)
- Drug screening within 30 days of start
- Immunizations/titers for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (with facility-specific declination if applicable)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
- Competency Exams: Medication/pharmacology competency and dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (must score 82% or higher; remediation process in place if needed).
- Orientation & Training:
- Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (for NC travel candidates)
- Annual compliance training and medication safety module
- Facility-specific policies and confidentiality agreement
- Photo for Badge: Passport-style photo on white background required immediately after signing contract.
- Corp ID & I-Learn: Must complete Novant Health Corp ID setup and log into I-Learn within 24 hours of password creation.
Additional Notes
- RTO (Return to Office) Policy: No RTO after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation.
- Strong Neuro ICU experience is mandatory; candidates without this should not be submitted.
- Candidates must be comfortable with flexible patient ratios up to 3:1 during high census.
This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU RNs with prior travel experience seeking a challenging role in a comprehensive stroke center environment on night shifts.
