Registered Nurse (RN) – Stepdown Unit (Days)

Location: Petoskey, Michigan
Employment Type: Temporary
Shift: Days (12-hour shifts)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Overview

  • Stepdown Unit (Level 2 North) is a 28-bed Medical Surgical Unit with a diverse patient population including general and vascular surgery, bariatric surgery, plastic surgery, trauma, and stroke patients.
  • Fast-paced environment focused on patient safety, quality care, and positive patient outcomes.
  • Emphasizes evidence-based and holistic nursing care.
  • Active Unit Based Council (Shared Governance) promotes teamwork and a healthy work environment.
  • Strong interdisciplinary collaboration using clinical pathways, patient education, and interactive communication.

Job Description

  • Provide nursing care on the Cardiovascular Unit (CVU), caring for cardiology patients undergoing procedures such as PTCA, stents, TAVR, MitraClip, bi-ventricular pacemakers, and post-open heart surgery care (18-24 hours post-op).
  • Manage patients with congestive heart failure and electrophysiology studies.
  • Participate in clinical trials managed by the research department.
  • The CVU has received a Silver level Beacon Award and was redesigned by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN).

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Michigan
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in Cardiac Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Stepdown Unit, with recent experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Proficiency in cardiac nursing, including EKG interpretation
  • Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
  • Ability and willingness to travel and float to similar units

Attendance Policy

  • Strict 3-strike attendance policy effective 6/1/2024:
    • Termination after 3 absences or being more than 20 minutes late for scheduled shifts.
    • Exceptions considered for communicable diseases or hospitalization with supporting evidence.

  • References are not required.
  • Physical copies of certifications only required if specifically listed.
  • Full-time employees of the health system are not eligible for contract hire within six months of employment.
  • Local traveler policy applies: candidates living within 35 miles of the facility are considered local travelers.
