Registered Nurse (RN) – CVU 5E Unit
Location
- Omaha, Nebraska
Job Description
- Work in a combined Cardio/General ICU, PCU, and MedSurg unit (HVI).
- Generalist ICU and PCU experience accepted.
- Patient care includes PCU patients with expected nurse-to-patient ratios.
- Unit supports thoracic program, electrophysiology, cath lab, and structural heart cases.
- Common patient diagnoses: CVAs, CHF, A-fib with RVR, and other cardiac/vascular conditions.
- Patients require intermediate care and downgraded CVICU level care.
Contract Details
- Duration: 13 weeks
- Shift: 12-hour day shifts (06:30–19:00)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Floating: Required to float to units of same or lower acuity
- Orientation: 1-2 shifts tailored to experience
- No call or standby requirement
Staffing & Support
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4 generally; 1:3 for post-surgical patients in first 24 hours
- Charge nurse present on each shift (rarely takes patient assignment)
- Patient care techs/nurse aides: 1 per 18 patients
- Hospitalist and intensivist coverage 24/7; cardiology on call after hours
- Respiratory therapist available 24/7
- Remote telemetry techs monitor patients; RNs must read and interpret cardiac strips
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- Must have at least 1 year of experience with this patient population
- Ability to titrate drips including amiodarone, nitroglycerin, nicardipine, epinephrine, diltiazem, and other blood pressure medications
Additional Requirements & Policies
- Must pass a 90% score on a pass/fail open book exam during orientation
- Driver’s license required at time of submission (used to verify candidate is outside a 50-mile radius)
- Candidates cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with certain affiliated healthcare systems within 50 miles
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
- Scrub color: Navy blue
Equipment & Technology
- Respiratory equipment includes BiPAP, CPAP, and nasal cannula; RNs troubleshoot but do not operate
- Telemetry monitors include hardwired and telemetry box systems
