Description

Registered Nurse (RN) - Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

Location: El Paso, Texas
Employment Type: Travel Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM - 7:00 PM)
Hours per Week: 36


Unit Overview

  • Pediatric unit with intensive care needs
  • Total beds: 19 (10 PICU beds, 9 Pediatric beds)
  • Staff: 27 total (Day shift: 1 Charge Nurse + 3-4 Nurses; Night shift: 1 Charge Nurse + 3-4 Nurses)
  • Patient Ratios:
    • PICU: 1 nurse to 2 patients
    • Intermediate Care (IMC): 1:3 (or 1:4 with Patient Care Technician)
    • Pediatrics: 1:5 (or 1:6 with Patient Care Technician)
  • Equipment includes Hillrom beds, GC monitors, ICU Medial Plum 360 pumps, and Medfusion syringe pumps
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system: Meditech
  • No call requirements
  • Weekend shifts: 4 per month (AM shifts cover Saturday and Sunday; PM shifts cover Friday and Saturday)
  • Scrub color: Galaxy blue

Job Responsibilities & Procedures

  • Provide nursing care for pediatric patients ranging from surgical cases (e.g., appendicitis) to critically ill patients requiring vasoactive drips and mechanical ventilation
  • Typical procedures performed:
    • Lumbar punctures
    • Intubations
    • Chest tube placements
    • Conscious sedation

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Texas
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 1 year of recent Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) experience
  • Experience working with pediatric patients
  • Certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • Advanced Life Support (ALS)
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional Pediatric ICU experience is highly desirable
