Description

Registered Nurse – Emergency Room (ER)

Location: Franklin, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 3 shifts per week (36 hours/week)


Job Overview

  • Mid-size hospital near Indianapolis seeking an ER travel nurse for an ASAP start.
  • Emergency Department with 26 beds and 3 trauma bays.
  • Fast track treatment area with 4 beds; no separate triage area—nurses perform triage within the department.
  • ER holds are intermixed within the ER and managed by ER nurses.
  • One designated psych/seclusion room with lower ligature risk and camera monitoring.
  • 24/7 in-house security staffed by law enforcement outside the ED.
  • Average patient volume: 60 patients per day.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4.

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Patients range from pediatric to geriatric.
  • Common cases include abdominal pain, altered mental status, STEMI (sent out), stroke (some kept, some sent), chest pain, COVID, shortness of breath, and moderate sedation cases.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana
  • Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience
  • Emergency Department experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS, and NRP
  • Proficient in EKG rhythm interpretation

Work Environment & Team

  • Physicians and mid-level providers include MDs, DOs, PAs, and NPs.
  • Charge nurse coverage 24/7; house supervisor coverage evenings and nights on weekdays, 24/7 on holidays and weekends.
  • Support staff includes medics, patient care technicians (PCTs), and sitters (PCTs or medics). Medics assist with EKGs, IVs, medication administration, and transport.
  • Respiratory therapists available 24/7, assist with breathing treatments, ABGs, intubation, and ventilator management.
  • Nurses monitor telemetry and interpret cardiac strips.
  • Radiology (X-Ray, CT) located close to ER; radiology staff typically transport patients unless critical, then nurse accompanies.
  • Nursing staff performs approximately 90% of phlebotomy draws; lab assists as needed.
  • Electronic Medical Record system: Cerner.

Scheduling & Work Requirements

  • 12-hour night shifts (7pm–7am, 11pm–11am, or 3pm–3am) on a 6-week rotating schedule.
  • Staff self-schedules; manager balances the schedule.
  • Weekend requirement: every 3rd weekend.
  • Holiday work: flexibility required.
  • No call or standby requirement.
  • Possible floating primarily to sitter roles; minimal floating to other units.

Orientation & Policies

  • Unit-specific orientation: 1–2 shifts with a preceptor.
  • Dress code: Navy blue scrubs; no facial piercings except nose piercing with mask; no gauges; tattoos allowed if not inappropriate or vulgar.
  • Punctuality and full commitment to contract completion are mandatory.

Additional Notes

  • Rapid Time Off (RTO) requests must be submitted upfront.
