Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – ICU
Location: South Charleston, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, 6:45 pm to 7:15 am)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit Details
- ICU with 18 beds currently, expanding to 27 beds by mid-2023
- Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:2, occasionally 1:3 during overflow or PCU downgrade
- Patient population: adolescent, adult, and geriatric
- Common patient conditions: critically ill with complex, life-threatening issues including sepsis, acute MI, renal failure, post-vascular procedures, strokes, TIA, seizures, ARDS (ventilator management), lumbar drains, cardiovascular procedures
- Use of invasive and non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring
- Titration of critical drips such as vasopressors and sedation required
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Current RN license
- BLS (AHA)
- ACLS (AHA)
Preferred Certifications:
- PALS
- TNCC (required starting October 2026)
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of critical care (ICU) experience
- Experience with CRRT, IABP, and Impella preferred
- Prior travel experience required (must have completed at least one prior travel contract)
Clinical Responsibilities
- RN responsible for titrating drips including Levophed, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Heparin, and Insulin
- Floating required to Stepdown unit; occasional float to Med-Surg/Telemetry or Emergency Department for boarded ICU/Stepdown patients
- No charge nurse or house supervisor responsibilities for travelers; charge nurse role primarily without patient load
Staffing & Support
- Hospitalist coverage 24/7; intensivist coverage not always present
- Respiratory therapists available as needed but not stationed in ICU 24/7
- No nurse aides on the unit
- Telemetry monitoring present; RNs read strips (no monitor tech)
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Night shift block scheduling available
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Fri-Sat or Sat-Mon)
- Holiday rotation with core staff
- No call or standby requirement
- Scrub dress code: solid color scrubs only (navy for RN/LPN), no embroidery or patterns; closed-toed shoes required; specific fleece zip-ups allowed in certain colors
Orientation & Training
- General hospital orientation on first day
- Full day nursing orientation plus computer training
- Two 12-hour orientation shifts with a preceptor
- Initial skills checklist to be completed within 90 days of start date
This position offers a challenging ICU environment caring for critically ill patients with complex needs, requiring strong critical care skills, experience with advanced monitoring and interventions, and flexibility to float within related units.
