Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg Level 8

Location: Weirton, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts, rotating day/night (usually 2 weeks days / 2 weeks nights)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit Type: Medical-Surgical (48 beds)


Unit & Patient Information

  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • Days: 1:5-7
    • Nights: 1:6-8
  • Common patient diagnoses: Pneumonia, UTI, Altered Mental Status (AMS), GI bleed, Alcohol withdrawal, falls/weakness
  • Charge Nurse coverage:
    • Day shift has 2 charge nurses who take patient assignments
    • Night shift may have 1 or 2 charge nurses; if only 1, they do not take patient assignments
  • Patient Care Techs (PCTs) / Nurse Aids:
    • Ratio approximately 1:10-12 (can be higher)
    • Duties include vitals, blood glucose monitoring, EKGs, applying heart monitors, bathing, feeding, toileting, turning, and positioning

Required Qualifications

  • Active RN license
  • BLS certification
  • Minimum 1 year of MedSurg nursing experience (higher experience requirement applies)
  • No prior travel experience required; first-time travelers accepted

Clinical Responsibilities

  • RN drip titration: Yes, except no cardiac drip titration
  • Common drips: Heparin, Bumex, Lasix
  • Respiratory equipment:
    • Respiratory Therapists (RTs) handle breathing treatments, inhalers, ABGs, and manage BiPAP, CPAP, and high flow O2
    • RNs monitor respiratory equipment but are not required to perform treatments or checks
  • Telemetry monitoring:
    • Telemetry techs monitor and interpret strips remotely
    • RNs are not expected to read or interpret telemetry strips

Scheduling & Work Environment

  • No self-scheduling or block scheduling; schedule created by manager with consideration for requested time off
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday requirement: May be included in holiday rotation (RNs); PCTs work holidays if scheduled
  • No call or standby requirements
  • Floating: May float to other MedSurg, MedSurg-Telemetry, or Intermediate Care units for lower acuity patients
  • Dress code:
    • RN scrubs: Navy blue
    • PCT scrubs: Ceil blue

Orientation

  • Unit-specific orientation includes:
    • 1 day with educator/computer system training
    • 1 day preceptorship on the unit

Additional Notes

  • Must comply with a 50-mile radius rule for candidate submissions (driver’s license required)
  • Licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission
