Description
Job Opportunity: Respiratory Therapist - NICU
Location
- Charlottesville, Virginia
Employment Type
- Travel/Contract
- Duration: 13 weeks
- Shift: Nights (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM)
- Hours per week: 36
- Schedule: Every other weekend and every other holiday off
- Unit uses a self-scheduling model (manager will explain; desired schedule not guaranteed but accommodated when possible)
- No Return to Office (RTO) allowed for July 4th
Work Environment
- Children's hospital setting
- Unit specialty: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
- Cardiac Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) experience preferred
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Respiratory Therapist license in Virginia
- Minimum of 1 year of recent Respiratory Therapist experience
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required
Required Background and Compliance
- Government-issued photo ID must be carried during hours of service
- 7-year criminal background check within 60 days of start, updated annually; must cover all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated every 30 days
- Education verification through a third-party vendor; official transcripts acceptable (photocopies not accepted)
- Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check required if assigned to behavioral health or specific units; must be processed within 45 days prior to start
- Fingerprinting may be required depending on unit; facility will notify if needed
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- RRT credential
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) may be required depending on unit
- Other certifications such as Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC), Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM), or Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) are unit-dependent and may be required
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months prior to start, attesting ability to meet physical demands of position
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination (Tdap must be after age 11; no exemptions allowed)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol (2-step PPD or Qgold within 12 months; chest X-ray if positive)
- Annual TB questionnaire if past positive
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required; no declinations accepted for measles
- Hepatitis B: Positive Hep B Surface Antibody titer required; if low/negative, additional antigen titer required
- Varicella: 2 vaccines or titer required; declination accepted but must be documented
- Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (no exemptions)
- Drug screening: 10-panel including marijuana and fentanyl, within 2 months of start and updated annually
Additional Requirements
- Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
- Skills checklist and competency exams as applicable, updated annually
- Professional appearance guidelines must be reviewed and acknowledged
- Facility-specific compliance and screening forms must be completed prior to start
- Fit testing required for patient-facing roles, completed onsite if needed

- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position
- Candidates must be able to obtain a Virginia temporary license if not already licensed in Virginia
- Cardiac PICU experience is preferred but not mandatory
