Registered Nurse (Med/Tele/PCU)

Location: Bismarck, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days (7a-7p)
Hours per Day: 12
Hours per Week: 36


Unit & Patient Population

  • Unit Type: Medical/Telemetry/Cardiac Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
  • Number of Beds: 32
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
    • Day: 1:4-5
    • Night: Occasional 1:5-6
    • PCU overflow: 1:3
  • Patient Types: Adults and geriatrics with cardiac conditions including cardiac caths, electrophysiology studies, pacemakers, alcohol-related issues, COVID-19 on BiPAP, general surgical patients with heart history, pneumonia (including COVID), acute on chronic conditions, influenza, sepsis

Required Skills & Experience

  • Must have PCU experience and be able to read and interpret cardiac strips independently
  • Telemetry/Cardiac nursing experience preferred
  • Epic electronic health record experience preferred
  • First-time travel nurses are acceptable
  • RN required to titrate drips such as Amiodarone, Cardizem, Heparin, Nitro, Nipride, Lasix, and low dose Dopamine (no Levophed)

Certifications & Licenses

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) required
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) required
  • Valid RN license for North Dakota

Orientation & Scheduling

  • Orientation: 2 shifts (12 hours each), typically Friday and Saturday of the first week; independent by Sunday
  • Shift Rotation: 7a-7p and 7p-7a shifts; 7-7 rotation will not occur more than once weekly
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
  • Floating: Required to float to PCU, Medical-Surgical, and some ER hold/boarding areas as needed
  • Dress Code: Any color scrubs allowed

Additional Unit Information

  • Charge Nurse present on both shifts, occasionally takes a light patient load (2-3 patients)
  • Nurse aides/patient care technicians support the unit with a goal ratio of 1:10
  • Respiratory equipment includes BiPAP, tracheostomies, Airvo; RNs troubleshoot but do not manage ventilation settings
  • Telemetry/Monitor techs present at nurse’s station and patient rooms
  • No call or standby requirements

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to start within 7 days of contract acceptance (Return to Office timeframe)
  • Radius rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any related healthcare system facilities within the area

This is a 13-week contract for an experienced Med/Tele/PCU RN with strong cardiac and telemetry skills, including strip interpretation and drip titration. The role involves working 12-hour day shifts with every other weekend and holiday coverage, floating across related units, and requires current BLS and ACLS certifications.
