Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – 4N Ortho-Neuro
Location: Parkersburg, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Patient Population
- Unit: 4N Ortho-Neuro (33 beds, all private rooms)
- Patient types: Elective surgeries (hips, knees, shoulders), fractures from falls, back & neck neuro-surgeries, general MedSurg
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6
- Common equipment: PCA pumps, IV fluids; no heparin or other drips
- RNs do not titrate drips
- Remote telemetry monitored by another floor; RNs do not read strips
- Respiratory support available: CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow (managed by RT)
Required Qualifications
- Current BLS (AHA) certification
- Valid West Virginia RN license or compact RN license
- Experience with orthopedic patients and PCA pumps required
- EPIC electronic medical record experience required
- Must submit an unexpired driver’s license with application
Work Schedule & Staffing
- 12-hour night shifts: 1900–0730 (with a 30-minute lunch break)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Fri/Sat/Sun for nights)
- Holiday shifts assigned based on unit needs; travelers may be expected to work holidays if permanent staff coverage is insufficient
- Floating required to other MedSurg units; if floated to Telemetry, assignments will be within skillset
- Travelers are first to float
- Charge nurse available 24/7; night charge nurse always has a full patient assignment
- Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) assist with vitals, fingerstick blood sugars, ADLs, and Foley catheter discontinuation; typically 2-4 PCTs depending on staffing
Orientation & Dress Code
- Orientation: 1 day EPIC training, 1 day floor orientation with preceptor, then independent on day 3
- Dress code: Royal blue scrubs; scrub jackets allowed only if royal blue (no hoodies or sweatshirts)
Additional Notes
- Travelers may be called off for low census depending on contract specifics
- Time-off requests should be noted during prescreening
- No charge nurse or house supervisor duties required for travelers
