Registered Nurse (ER) - Texas, College Station
Job Overview
- Position: Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN)
- Location: College Station, Texas
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (day and night shifts start at 6:45 AM; midshifts start at 9, 11, 1, or 3)
- Scheduling: Matrix scheduling with attempts to accommodate traveler preferences
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: Worked in with permanent staff rotation
- Call/Standby: None
- Floating: Travelers are usually first to float and serve as a helping hand if floating is required
Facility & Unit Information
- Trauma Level: Level III Trauma Center
- STEMI and Stroke Receiving Center
- ER Beds: 18 total, including 4 critical rooms for trauma or codes
- Fast Track: 6 beds
- Separate Triage Area: Yes; travelers are allowed to staff triage
- Holding Area: No separate holding area; holds are intermixed within the ER
- Psych/Seclusion Rooms: 1
- Security: In-house 24/7, rounds in ER
- Average Patients per Day: Approximately 70
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:3-4 depending on acuity
- Charge Nurse: Generally patient-free, does not take assignment
- Support Staff: 2 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) per shift, occasionally pulled to be sitters
- Respiratory Therapist (RT): Present 24/7; perform ABGs, breathing treatments, run vents; RNs perform EKGs
- RT Equipment: Nasal cannula to ventilators; RNs troubleshoot equipment
- Monitor Techs: None; RNs read and interpret telemetry strips
- Imaging: X-Ray and CT located nearby; nurses assist with transport
- Phlebotomy: Dedicated phlebotomy staff draws labs, not RNs
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Pediatric patients admitted locally (super sick pediatric patients transferred out)
- Cardiac cases including STEMIs
- Stroke patients
- Some trauma cases (multisystem trauma transferred out)
- General ER cases: abdominal pain, respiratory issues, gastrointestinal problems, etc.
Required Certifications and Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Texas
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation: 1-3 shifts depending on experience
- Orientation includes a checkoff packet reviewed with a preceptor
Additional Information
- RN not responsible for arranging placement for psychiatric patients; screening and placement handled by others
- Call-outs are strongly discouraged and may lead to termination
- Dress Code: Navy scrubs required; undershirts must be navy; scrub jackets optional but must be navy
- Traveler extensions are encouraged
