Registered Nurse (ICU) - Nebraska, Kearney

Job Details

  • Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, 1830-0630)
  • Hours per Week: 48
  • Unit: Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • Beds: 33 total, average daily census 16
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2-3 for adults
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
  • Holiday Requirement: Minimum of 2 holidays during contract
  • Orientation: 1 shift of unit-specific orientation
  • Return to Orientation (RTO): Required upfront if less than 7 days per 13-week contract; no additional RTO approved

Patient Population & Care

  • Common patient diagnoses include trauma, cardiac issues, overdose/substance abuse, adult sepsis, post-stent, pacemaker placement, stroke, vascular cases, renal failure, heart failure, and respiratory distress
  • RNs are required to titrate drips including cardiac drips, insulin, and sedation
  • Respiratory equipment includes nasal cannula to ventilator; RNs troubleshoot but respiratory therapists provide primary care
  • RNs must read, interpret, and document telemetry strips (monitor brand: GE) with tele tech oversight
  • Floating assignments typically to Progressive Care Unit (PCU) or occasionally MedSurg with typical ratios of 1:4 or 1:5

Scheduling & Policies

  • Self-scheduling allowed for core staff and travelers; block scheduling generally not approved except possibly for weekends only
  • No duo scheduling or shared car arrangements allowed
  • If placed on call and called back in, must arrive within 30 minutes
  • Fingernail policy: Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
  • RN orientation includes a pass/fail exam on Wednesdays (open book, 90% required to pass)

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Current RN license
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Additional Requirements

  • Must have a valid driver’s license at time of submission; used to verify candidate is within 50 miles radius
  • Candidates may not be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with a specific health system (excluded employers)
  • Nurse aides and healthcare support techs assist based on census and patient volume

This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs comfortable with critical care patient populations, telemetry monitoring, and titrating drips in a fast-paced environment.
