Registered Nurse (ICU) - Council Bluffs, Iowa
Position Details
- Specialty: ICU Registered Nurse
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Nights (18:30 - 07:00)
- Hours per Day: 12
- Hours per Week: 36
- Unit: Medical ICU (16 beds)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 2:1
- Weekend Requirement: Every third weekend
- Holiday Requirement: July 4th
- Scheduling: No self-scheduling or guaranteed block scheduling; traveler needed for high-need night shift
- Floating: May float to Progressive Care Unit (PCU) if not needed in ICU
- Orientation: 1 shift ICU-specific + 1 shift PCU-specific
Patient Population & Care
- Common diagnoses: sepsis, respiratory failure, stroke, myocardial infarction, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), STEMI, atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response, COVID-19, COPD exacerbations, pulmonary embolism
- Stabilization of some GI cases prior to transfer
- Hospitalist coverage 24/7 in-house
- Intensivist coverage in-house during day; telemedicine coverage at night
- Respiratory Therapist shared with ER; RT manages ventilator adjustments and settings
- Centralized telemonitor techs (not in-house); nurses verify and read cardiac monitor strips (Draeger monitors)
- No nurse aides or patient care technicians on unit
Required Skills & Experience
- Preferred minimum 2 years ICU experience
- Experience with drips, ventilators, BiPAP
- Ability to titrate drips including vasopressors and sedation (e.g., levophed, neosynephrine, cardene, precedex, propofol)
- Charge nurse present each shift and takes patient assignment
- Prior travel experience preferred but not required
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Current RN license
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) and TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) preferred
Additional Requirements & Policies
- Must pass a pass/fail exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90%; open book with resources provided
- Radius rule: candidate must live within 50 miles and cannot have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN within the past year at any facility associated with certain large healthcare systems
- Valid driver’s license required at time of application to verify distance
- Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
- Dress code: navy blue scrubs
