Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – MS/Telemetry Float Pool
Location: Garden City, Kansas
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
Job Overview
- Float pool position covering multiple units within a 60-mile radius zone around Garden City, KS.
- No home base facility; nurses must be willing and able to float between several hospitals and units within the zone.
- Units include MS-Telemetry, ICU (low acuity holds within skillset), PCU/Stepdown, and various specialty areas such as Cardiac, Neuro, Oncology, Rehab, Renal, Bariatrics, Ortho, Trauma, and ED Observation.
- Nurse-to-patient ratios typically range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on patient acuity.
- Schedules are released 4–6 weeks in advance and may follow one of two formats:
- Assigned to a single facility for the week with possible floating within that facility.
- Just-In-Time (JIT) assignments where the facility is assigned 1–2 hours before shift start.
- Weekend requirement: 6–9 weekend shifts within a 6-week schedule.
- Holiday rotation participation may be required.
- Call or standby is rare and only for low census situations.
- All time off requests must be submitted prior to starting the assignment.
Patient Population & Care
- Adult to geriatric patients with a variety of diagnoses including:
- Cardiac, Neurological, Orthopedic, Oncology, Renal, Urology (post-surgical), General Surgery (post-appendectomy), Gynecology, Psychiatry/Detox, ENT, General Medicine, and stable long-term placement patients.
- Nurses are expected to titrate heparin drips.
- Respiratory therapy equipment such as vents, CPAP, and BiPAP are used on units.
- Charge nurses are designated on each unit and typically do not take patient assignments unless necessary, more common on night shifts.
- Nurse aides are present on the units.
Required Qualifications
- Current RN license valid in Kansas.
- Minimum of 2 years of Medical-Surgical Telemetry (MS-Tele) nursing experience within the last 3 years.
- Preferred experience with neurological patients.
- Preferred experience with Alaris infusion pumps and EPIC electronic medical records system.
- Required certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – American Heart Association
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – American Heart Association
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
Additional Information
- Orientation week requires clinicians to be physically present in Kansas, even if some modules are completed remotely.
- Floating is mandatory throughout the entire 60-mile zone; nurses are responsible for securing housing that allows feasible travel within this area.
- The hiring process includes an interview with the clinical team; no unit manager involvement.
This position is ideal for experienced MS-Telemetry RNs who are flexible, enjoy varied clinical experiences, and are comfortable floating across multiple facilities and specialties within a defined geographic zone.
