Registered Nurse (ER RN) - Phoenix, Arizona


Job Details

  • Specialty: Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN)
  • Location: Phoenix, Arizona
  • Shift: Nights
  • Hours: 12 hours per shift, approximately 36 hours per week
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks minimum (no contracts shorter than 13 weeks accepted)
  • Unit: Emergency Department / Trauma
  • Unit Size: Acute beds - 36, Subacute beds - 54, Trauma bays - 6 (no travelers assigned to trauma bays)
  • Patient Volume: Approximately 250-300 patients per day, 88,000 patients per year
  • Patient Types: Trauma, burns, psych holds (30-40), pediatric patients transferred out, spinal cord injury, CP center cases
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4
  • Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per 4 weeks (unit discretion)
  • Orientation: 2-3 shifts of floor-specific orientation
  • Floating: Float within the ER and between 4 facilities within about 30 minutes of each other
  • EMR System: Cerner
  • Telemetry: Phillips monitors; must be able to read cardiac strips
  • Ventilator Management: Respiratory Therapists manage vents
  • Support Staff: 2 charge nurses with light patient loads, 4 patient care technicians (sitters)
  • In-House Providers: Minimum 2 hospitalists or intensivists, up to 8; midlevels and anesthesia present
  • Pharmacy: Pharmacist coverage 10 hours/day in ER
  • SIMs Lab: Required for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (pass/fail). Competency in sterile technique is mandatory.
  • Pass/Fail Exam: Day 1 of orientation; study guide provided

Required Qualifications

  • Licensure: Valid RN license for Arizona
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years of core ER nursing experience
    • At least 6 months of Level 1 Trauma experience
    • Level 1 Trauma and teaching hospital experience required
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) — ENPC does NOT substitute for PALS
    • Preferred: TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) and ATCN (Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses)
  • EMR Experience: Cerner experience required for ED
  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam: Must pass within 24-48 hours prior to acceptance; maximum 2 attempts allowed. Failure results in 6-month disqualification in region.
  • Vehicle: Travel teams must have their own vehicles
  • Travel Experience: Previous travel experience required for ED and Neuro ICU
  • Other:
    • Must be free of facial piercings and have natural hair color (no unnatural colors)
    • Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing
    • Cannot hold concurrent contracts with other employers during assignment
    • Must have been off permanent staff at this health system for at least 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment

  • Float Policy: Nurses may float between main campus, Westgate campus, and two freestanding ERs in nearby cities (total 4 facilities)
  • Uniform: Navy scrub color
  • Day 1 Pass/Fail Exam: Includes clinical skills and sterile technique; failure may result in termination
  • Orientation: Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holidays)
  • Parking: Assigned parking with shuttle service; night shift assigned to parking garage
  • Patient Care: Nurses expected to maintain sterile field and demonstrate competency in Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes
  • Work Environment: Level 1 Trauma center, nationally recognized tertiary care and transplant center

This position is ideal for experienced ER nurses with trauma background who are comfortable working in a high-volume, teaching hospital environment and meet the strict clinical and professional requirements.
