Description

Operating Room Technician

Location: Johnson City, New York
Employment Type: Clinical-Allied
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day (typically starting between 6 AM - 7 AM)
Hours: 40 hours per week (5 days of 8-hour shifts or 4 days of 10-hour shifts)
Call Requirements:

  • Up to 3 call shifts per week (8 to 16 hours each)
  • One working weekend with call shift every 4 weeks

Job Summary

Under general direction, the Operating Room Technician observes and practices sterile technique, maintains asepsis, anticipates and assists the surgeon as needed, and actively participates in patient care and safety. Utilizes OR supplies conservatively and operates as a team member of the OR staff.


Key Responsibilities

  • Follow infection control policies and demonstrate expertise in surgical scrub technique.
  • Adhere to sterile technique principles preoperatively and intra-operatively.
  • Assist the surgeon with gowning, gloving, draping, and passing instruments and related items during procedures.
  • Anticipate surgeon’s needs for instruments, sutures, and equipment.
  • Maintain an organized operative field, keeping instruments clean and properly placed.
  • Keep accurate counts of sponges, tape, needles, dissectors, and instruments.
  • Prepare for cases by assembling supplies and equipment per preference cards; identify conflicts or problems.
  • Care for instruments and supplies appropriately after each case.
  • Provide a safe surgical environment by identifying potential hazards and assisting in preoperative equipment checks.
  • Display knowledge of potential hazards in the OR (equipment, chemicals, gases).
  • Utilize experienced OR staff as a resource and assist new OR personnel.
  • Assist in suturing, retracting, and suctioning under surgeon’s direction.
  • Handle and identify specimens according to policy.
  • Expedite efficient OR turnover between cases.
  • Participate in rotating call duty.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as requested.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of high school or an equivalent educational qualification.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential from NBSTSA.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Minimum of 1 year of Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) Technologist experience within the last year.
  • Cardiothoracic experience including CABG, valve replacements, VATS, robotic chest procedures, etc.
  • Surgical Technologist experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous Operating Room experience.
  • Experience with EPIC system.
