Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – CVICU

Location: South Charleston, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days (12-hour shifts, 6:45 am – 7:15 pm)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit: Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) – 4 beds for acute recovery phase before transfer to Medical ICU or Stepdown Unit


Job Overview

  • Care for critically ill adult and geriatric patients with complex cardiovascular conditions, including invasive and non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Patient ratios start at 1:1 during initial phase, progressing to 1 nurse to 2 patients by post-op day 1.
  • RNs are responsible for titrating drips such as Dopamine, Levophed, Vaso, Dobutamine, Argatroban, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, Lasix, Epinephrine, and Neosynephrine.
  • No nurse aides on the unit; RNs read telemetry strips (no monitor techs).
  • Floating to Medical ICU required if CVICU census is low.
  • Weekend coverage every other weekend; rotational holiday schedule.
  • No call or standby requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in West Virginia
  • Minimum 1 year of CVICU experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications issued by the American Heart Association
  • Experience with Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), Impella, and Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP)
  • Prior travel nursing experience

Work Environment & Orientation

  • Charge Nurse role primarily without patient assignments; House Supervisor available 24/7.
  • Respiratory Therapists available as needed (not stationed in ICU).
  • Respiratory equipment includes BiPAP, CPAP, mechanical ventilation via trach and ET tube.
  • Orientation includes general hospital orientation, full nursing orientation day, computer training, and two 12-hour orientation shifts with a preceptor.
  • Initial Skills Checklist to be completed within 90 days of start date.

Dress Code

  • RNs/LPNs: Navy solid color scrubs.
  • No embroidery or patterns allowed.
  • Solid undershirts in white, grey, or black matching scrub top.
  • Closed-toed shoes required; no crocs.
  • Optional fleece zip-ups in grey, black, navy, or royal blue.

Additional Notes

  • Hospitalist and intensivist coverage includes CT surgery attending and critical care/pulmonary coverage.
  • Telemetry monitoring is performed by RNs.
  • Shift options also include nights (6:45 pm – 7:15 am) but this posting is for days.
  • Weekend and holiday scheduling is rotational.
