Travel Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (North Carolina)

Job Details

  • Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: Night shift, 12-hour shifts (typically 4 shifts per week, 18:45–7:15)
  • Target Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5-6
  • Floating: Required
  • Weekend Requirement: 12-16 weekend hours per contract
  • Orientation: 24 hours unit orientation plus hospital orientation week one (attendance required for classes daily)
  • Scrubs: Navy or white
  • Special Procedures/Unit Details:
    • Isolation area for COVID patients
    • Multi-level care including stepdown (staffed by stepdown nurses)
  • Unit Systems: Pyxis, Epic, SBAR communication
  • Scheduling: Based on unit needs
  • Additional: Contract staff may be assigned to Storm/Hurricane Teams and required to work during catastrophic events or disasters

Required Skills & Experience

  • Minimum Specialty Experience: 2 years as a Registered Nurse
  • Traveler Experience: Accepts first-time travelers (no prior travel experience required)

Required Certifications

  • BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
  • Must pass EKG/Dysrhythmia competency testing prior to start (minimum score 82%, up to 3 attempts allowed)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background check within 6 months for clinical candidates
  • Drug screening within 6 months (9-panel or instant acceptable)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or documentation of past positive TB with appropriate follow-up)
  • Required immunizations and titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Flu vaccination or approved exemption with mask requirement during flu season
  • Physical exam (per Aya Healthcare standards)
  • Medication safety training and competency exams
  • Color blindness testing within 1 year
  • Various facility-specific mandatory education and compliance trainings (e.g., confidentiality, tobacco-free campus, annual compliance)
  • Photo for badge (passport style, white background, business attire) required immediately after signing contract
  • Must complete Novant-specific orientation and education modules as assigned

Additional Notes

  • No Return to Origin (RTO) allowed after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation
  • Must be available to work assigned shifts and float as needed
  • Must be able to work during disaster or mass casualty events if required
  • Navy or white scrubs required
  • Must complete all required documentation and training prior to start to avoid delays

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
  • Minimum of 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience
  • Medical-Surgical nursing experience within the last year
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Interpretation of dysrhythmias
  • IV insulin protocols
  • Feeding tube care and management
  • Pre/Post Hemodialysis management
  • Central line blood draws
  • Phlebotomy
  • PICC line management
