Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg Float Position

Location: Bridgeport, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days (12-hour shifts, 7a - 7p)
Hours per Week: 36 hours

Job Description

• Float position covering Orthopedic units with MedSurg/Telemetry experience preferred, plus low-level Ortho experience.
• Must be proficient with EPIC electronic medical records.
• Patient ratios typically 1:5-6 for both day and night shifts; occasionally up to 7 patients near shift end depending on acuity.
• Work includes reading and interpreting telemetry strips (Phillips monitors).
• RN responsibilities include performing aerosols for non-vented patients and EKGs.
• Float assignments may include MedSurg or stepdown-type patients if assigned to Critical Care.
• Weekend and holiday rotation required (every other weekend, including Saturdays and Sundays).
• Orientation includes 1-2 shifts with a preceptor specific to the floor.
• Common patient diagnoses: CHF, cardiac catheterization, chest pain, pneumonia, chronic renal disease, COPD, Orthopedics, and Oncology (chemotherapy administered by permanent staff).
• Charge nurse present on every unit; day charge nurse does not take patients, night charge nurse does.
• Nurse aides (CNAs) are used on all units.
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7; RT manages CPAP, BiPAP, and vents.
• IV team available house-wide until 10 pm weekdays and 3:30 pm weekends.
• In-house pharmacy operates 24/7 with Accudose system.
• Dress code includes royal blue scrubs.
• No false nails allowed.
• The manager is traveler-friendly and open to requests for primarily working on a specific unit with possible block scheduling.

Required Qualifications

• Current West Virginia RN license or compact nursing license.
• BLS certification.
• Valid, unexpired driver’s license (must be submitted with application).
• Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips.
• Experience with EPIC EMR system.
• MedSurg and Telemetry nursing experience preferred; some Orthopedic experience required.

Additional Information

• Must comply with a 50-mile radius rule for candidate submissions.
• Weekend and holiday work is part of the schedule.
• 12-hour shifts with a mix of day and night coverage.
• RT manages ventilators; RNs handle aerosols and EKGs for non-vented patients.
