Description
Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Primarily caring for medical-surgical patients with oncology history.
- Night shift (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 18:45 to 7:15).
- Patient-to-nurse ratio target: 1:6 (may increase with census).
- Floating required to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations (e.g., inpatient holding in the ED).
- Every other weekend required.
- Call required if called off on a prescheduled shift; missed shifts must be made up.
- Contract staff expected to participate in Storm/Hurricane Team and may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters.
- Attendance at monthly staff meetings required.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Experience in an inpatient setting
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
Patient Diagnoses & Unit Details
- Common diagnoses: AKI, sepsis, cancer, septic shock, pain management, overdose, malignant neoplasms, acute renal failure, encephalopathy, failure to thrive, diabetic foot ulcers, heparin drips.
- Administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy via IV, PO, or injection.
- Daily census approximately 42 patients.
Orientation & Uniform
- Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts).
- Scrubs: Navy blue and white.
Systems Used
- Medication and documentation systems: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR communication method.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background check required within 6 months for clinical candidates.
- Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months of start.
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year of start; additional documentation required if past positive.
- Required immunizations and titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Physical exam and references required per travel agency standards.
- Mandatory completion of facility-specific education modules and compliance training.
- Must complete medication safety training and provide certificate of completion.
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (for NC travel candidates).
- Must complete annual compliance and confidentiality agreements.
- Must provide a passport-style photo for badge creation immediately after signing contract.
- Must complete Corp ID setup and I-Learn login within 24 hours of receiving credentials to avoid start delays.
Additional Notes
- Contract staff may be preassigned to different units as needed.
- Must be prepared to work during emergency situations including storms and disasters.
- Floating includes inpatient holding areas and alternate medical patient care locations.
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season; exemptions require mask-wearing on campus.
This position is ideal for Med/Surg RNs with oncology experience seeking a travel contract in a dynamic inpatient setting with a focus on oncology and medical-surgical care. Night shift availability and flexibility to float and respond to emergency events are essential.
