Registered Nurse (L&D) - Texas, Seguin

Job Overview

  • Location: Seguin, Texas (San Antonio area)
  • Specialty: Labor & Delivery (L&D)
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: Nights (7 PM - 7 AM)
  • Hours per Week: 36 hours (12-hour shifts)
  • Unit: Birthing Center with 9 L&D beds (all private), 4 triage beds, 12 postpartum beds (all private)
  • Operating Rooms: 2 C-Section OR suites within L&D
  • Patient Volume: 2-6 deliveries per day, 900+ births per year
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
    • L&D: 1:2 (1:1 for high risk or active labor)
    • Postpartum/Mother-Baby: 1:2-3 couplets
  • Call: No call required
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holidays: Work integrated into permanent staff rotation

Responsibilities

  • Circulate in C-sections, tubal ligations, and DNC procedures
  • Provide care in L&D, Postpartum, and Nursery areas
  • Float within the Birthing Center and occasionally to other units (non-infectious patients only)
  • Perform hourly rounding on day shifts and every 2 hours on night shifts
  • Participate in bedside report policy (moving toward hospital-wide implementation)
  • Support lactation in-room and post-delivery
  • Handle patients 35 weeks gestation and above, including multiples and twin vaginal deliveries (no serious high-risk or VBACs)
  • Nursery care required; GYN patients only rarely as overflow

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license
  • C-section experience required (must be able to circulate)
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program), Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM)
  • STABLE certification highly preferred (required for permanent staff)
  • Experience in L&D, Postpartum, and Nursery nursing

Work Environment & Support

  • Birthing Center is a secure, locked unit
  • Electronic Medical Records: MediTech Expanse
  • Fetal Heart Monitoring System: Centricity (CPN/GE)
  • Digital care boards in patient rooms
  • Charge nurse available (may take patients if needed)
  • OB/Neonatologist coverage: OB not in-house 24/7; clinic nearby during the day; Neonatologist on staff weekdays during the day
  • Anesthesiology not available 24/7
  • Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
  • Pharmacy: Pyxis system; pharmacist on-call evenings and weekends
  • Scrubs provided for OR (pink color, any shade)

  • Orientation includes a brief HR meeting and one shift with a preceptor within the department
  • Emphasis on professionalism: no tolerance for tardiness, laziness, or excessive phone use

Additional Notes

  • No ventilator patients
  • Nurses are not required to interpret telemetry strips (Neon Kohden system used)
  • Floating to other units possible if prior MedSurg experience exists
  • Staffed with 5 RNs on days and 4 on nights
