Registered Nurse - PCU

Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts of 12 hours, 18:45 - 7:15)
Hours per Week: 36


Job Description

  • Work on a mixed acuity unit with PCU and Med-Surg/Telemetry patients.
  • Patient population includes COPD exacerbations, pneumonia, respiratory distress, COVID-19 (including positive patients), flu, pulmonary embolisms, acute respiratory failure, and patients with chest tubes, CPAP, BiPAP.
  • Unit size: 48 beds.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:4-5; may go to 1:6 in extreme situations.
  • Float requirement: Must float to like units.
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
  • Unit acuity is high; ventilator patients are chronic trach/vent and limited to one vent patient per nurse.
  • Team support includes a team lead (3:1 ratio), 2 respiratory therapists, assistant nurse manager (including weekends), admission/discharge nurse, vascular access team, rapid response team, code team, and behavioral health team.
  • Special equipment used: chest tubes, drips (dopamine, Cardizem, heparin), vents, trachs, BiPAP/CPAP.
  • Unit systems: Pyxis, EPIC, SBAR.
  • Orientation: 24 hours.
  • Scrubs: Not provided; white or navy blue recommended.
  • Block scheduling can be accommodated based on unit needs.
  • Return to Office (RTO) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs or RTO may lead to cancellation.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU), with PCU experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Current ACLS certification.
  • Experience with ventilator care.
  • Experience with telemetry monitoring.
  • Experience with CPAP/BiPAP management.
  • Ability to interpret and manage dysrhythmias.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification preferred.

Scheduling & Shift Details

  • 12-hour night shifts.
  • 36 hours per week (3 shifts).
  • Weekend work every other weekend.
  • Contract length: 13 weeks.
  • Maximum 7 days RTO allowed for auto offer.

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days and updated annually.
  • Fit testing required (N95 mask within 1 year or completion of PAPR training via Novant’s iLearn system).
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray per facility policy.
  • Required immunizations or titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (titer or series or facility-specific declination). Declinations generally not accepted except for Hep B with facility-specific form.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption with mask requirement.
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
  • Background checks including local, federal, national criminal, sex offender, education verification, and others as required within 90 days of start.
  • Compliance with facility-specific policies including confidentiality agreement, medication safety training, and hospital policies acknowledgment.

Orientation & Onboarding

  • 24-hour unit orientation.
  • Must complete facility-specific education modules and competency validations as required.
  • Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation checklist if applicable.
  • Must complete annual compliance training and medication safety modules.
  • Must complete Corp ID setup and I-Learn login within 24 hours of receiving credentials to avoid start delays.
  • Passport-style photo required for badge creation (solid white background, business attire, no head coverings except glasses).
