Description

Registered Nurse – Medical/Surgical Intensive Care

Location: Prescott, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36


Unit & Patient Care Details

  • Unit includes CVICU (12 beds), COVID ICU (8 beds), Medical-Surgical ICU (8 beds), and PCU (16-20 beds with double occupancy), all under the Critical Care service line.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • ICU: 1:1 to 1:2 depending on acuity and staffing
    • PCU: 1:3 to 1:4
  • Common patient diagnoses: COVID (manual proning), low-level neuro, EVD, DKA, sepsis, PN, ARF, CRRT, rhabdomyolysis, post-MI, detox, chest tubes, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, surgical/post-surgical patients, Impella, TAVR, cardiac surgery, VAD devices, STEMI, PCI, CEA, IABP.
  • Nurses should be able to interpret ABGs and have strong EKG reading skills.
  • Travelers will care for fresh open heart patients if experienced and skills are checked off.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Must have experience with:
    • Weaning and troubleshooting ventilators
    • IABP and Prismaflex CRRT (preferred)
    • Titrating critical care drips including pressors (levophed), paralytics, sedation (propofol), antiarrhythmics, dopamine, heparin, argatroban
  • Ability to troubleshoot and assist with ventilators, including use of Glidescopes during intubation.
  • Must pass a dysrhythmia exam with a minimum score of 80% within two attempts prior to contract signing.

Certifications & Licenses

  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required.

Staffing & Support

  • Charge nurses may take patient assignments only as a last resort; typically two charge nurses cover ICUs and PCU.
  • House supervisor available 24/7 with some exceptions.
  • Intensivists on-site 24/7 with NP supplementation.
  • Respiratory therapists cover all areas but are not present in ICU 24/7.
  • No nurse aides on the unit.
  • No telemetry/monitor techs; nurses are responsible for reading their own telemetry strips (Nihon Kohden monitors).

Scheduling & Work Environment

  • 7am to 7pm shifts, schedules made 4 weeks in advance.
  • Some self-scheduling allowed but subject to manager approval.
  • No block scheduling typically allowed.
  • Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts per pay period (weekend nights are Friday-Saturday; weekend days are Saturday-Sunday, with some variation).
  • Holiday requirement: 1 holiday plus the eve of another holiday during winter; not all holidays require work.
  • Possible on-call once every 6 weeks during low census; no scheduled call.
  • Floating required within float rotation; may float to PCU, MST, or EC ICU/PCU as needed.
  • Dress code: professional scrubs of any color except camouflage; transitioning to navy scrubs in October.

Orientation & Onboarding

  • 8 hours general hospital orientation.
  • 1 twelve-hour shift with a preceptor on the unit.
  • 2nd twelve-hour shift with a buddy for support.
  • Additional orientation/checkoff for special skills (e.g., open heart surgery, CRRT).

Additional Requirements

  • Must live outside a 50-mile radius of the facility.
  • Cannot have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN at any affiliated facilities within the past year.

Summary

This is a travel RN opportunity for experienced Medical/Surgical ICU nurses with strong critical care skills, including ventilator management, titration of drips, and advanced cardiac monitoring. The role requires night shifts with a structured schedule, weekend and holiday coverage, and flexibility to float within critical care units. Certification in BLS and ACLS and passing a dysrhythmia exam are mandatory.
