Emergency Room Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Overland Park, Kansas
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work in a combined Adult/Pediatric Emergency Department (Non-Trauma)
  • Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 4 patients
  • Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM to 7:00 AM)
  • Weekend requirement: 8 weekend shifts within a 6-week schedule period (Friday/Saturday/Sunday)
  • Charge RN and holiday shifts may be assigned as needed
  • Floating within scope to ED Hold area, other departments, units, and facilities may be required
  • First-time travel nurses accepted
  • Local candidates within radius accepted
  • No pending licenses accepted
  • Return to work restrictions: no more than 7 days off

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department nursing experience, with experience within the last year
  • Skills in cardiac monitoring and emergency response, including management of dysrhythmias and multisystem organ dysfunction/failure
  • Proficient in IV therapy/phlebotomy including central line care/management
  • Experience with continuous IV sedation and IV vasopressors
  • Respiratory care skills including CPAP/BiPAP and ventilated patients
  • Knowledge of isolation precautions and triage

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (American Heart Association)
  • BLS (American Heart Association)
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • PALS (American Heart Association)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)

Licensure

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Kansas (or compact license valid in Kansas)
  • Primary source verification of professional license required

Education

  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required
  • Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required before start
  • Fingerprinting required if floating to long-term care or rehab units in Illinois
  • Drug testing within 1 year, including a comprehensive panel of substances
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask (N95) testing required and must be renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers required or declination forms for:
    • Tdap (Td vaccine acceptable for renewals)
    • TB testing (2-step PPD or equivalent within 1 year)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (positive titer, vaccination, or declination)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Sept-April)

Competency Requirements

  • Unit-specific competency exams including dysrhythmia/EKG exam (minimum 80% pass rate)
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam
  • Color blindness testing within 12 months of start
  • Skills checklist within 1 year of start (Oncology skills checklist required if assigned to Med Surg-Oncology unit)

Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Badge photo (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months)
  • HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, latex allergy questionnaire, hand hygiene, fingernail, and dress code policies must be reviewed and signed prior to start
  • Regulatory compliance education and orientation modules completed annually via online platform
  • Healthstream modules including Epic, glucose meter, and infusion pump training to be completed prior to start
  • Employment application and two professional references required (supervisors preferred)

Additional Notes

  • No on-call required
  • Guaranteed minimum of 3 shifts per 13 weeks
  • Floating may be required to meet facility needs
  • No block scheduling accommodation
