Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – PICU

Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Shift: 12-hour day/night rotating shifts
Hours per Week: 36 hours


Unit Overview

  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) with 20 total beds; average daily census around 15
  • Patient population includes congenital heart cases, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), respiratory issues, neurosurgery, tracheostomies, ventilator-dependent patients, G-tubes
  • Unit may also take adult patients; candidates must be comfortable caring for adults if needed (e.g., Labor & Delivery)
  • Pediatrician, residents, and advanced practice providers (APP) are in-house 24/7 with call room on the unit
  • Respiratory therapy equipment includes ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, managed by RTs
  • Telemetry monitored off-unit; central monitors located at ICU and stepdown desks; strips read remotely by telemetry techs

Staffing & Ratios

  • ICU nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:1 to 1:2
  • Stepdown nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3
  • Charge nurse available depending on staffing; house supervisor is always free
  • Nurse aides assist during daytime (1-2 aides) and nighttime (1 aide) with feeding, fingerstick blood sugars (FSBS), equipment needs, and bed preparation

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of PICU nursing experience (hard requirement)
  • Current BLS and PALS certifications required
  • Must be able to titrate drips including sedation protocols (Fentanyl, Versed, Precedex), vasoactive drugs, TPN, and maintenance IV fluids per physician orders
  • Fully COVID-19 vaccinated (2 doses Moderna or Pfizer, or 1 dose J&J) or have approved medical/religious exemption

Scheduling & Work Requirements

  • Self-scheduling with possibility of block scheduling, balanced by scheduling team
  • Weekend requirement: 2 weekends per 4-week schedule (Friday, Saturday, Sunday all count as weekend shifts)
  • Holiday work required as part of permanent staff holiday rotation
  • No call or standby requirement
  • Floating required within children’s units (Labor & Delivery, NICU, Acute Pediatrics) with normal patient ratios for floated unit

Orientation & Training

  • Unit-specific orientation includes EPIC training, new staff orientation (NSO), competencies, equipment review with clinical preceptor
  • 3 shifts in PICU with a mentor before independent practice

Additional Notes

  • Driver’s license address must be outside a 50-mile radius from the facility
  • Previous permanent candidates must have been gone for 2 years before reapplying
  • Previous travelers must have been gone for 2 years if they stayed 1 full year on the unit
  • Travel teams must be submitted together
  • Only 2 candidates submitted per opening; submissions may be held if position is full
