Registered Nurse - PCU (Travel/Contract)
Location: Overland Park, Kansas
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 18:45 - 7:15)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Patient Care Unit (PCU) Registered Nurse position with a 1:5 nurse-to-patient ratio.
- Float pool role: no home unit assignment; float between approximately 5 Med/Surg Intermediate/PCU units and other metro campuses as needed.
- Weekend requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday, Saturday, Sunday combination).
- Holiday shifts and Charge RN assignments as needed.
- Guaranteed minimum of 3 shifts per 13 weeks.
- Locals accepted within the local radius.
- No on-call or block schedule accommodations.
- Return to work restrictions: no more than 7 days off.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse license in Kansas.
- Minimum 1 year of recent experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
- Associate of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing.
- Experience with pre/post cardiac catheterization care.
- Experience managing alcohol (ETOH) related conditions.
- Experience managing suicidal ideation (SI).
- Atrial Fibrillation (AFIB) management experience.
- Stroke care experience.
- Skills in accessing ports.
- Experience with blood product administration.
- Central line care and management experience.
Compliance & Background Requirements
- Government-issued ID required.
- Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches as applicable.
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required.
- Education verification of highest nursing degree required before start.
- Fingerprinting required for assignments involving long-term care or rehab units in Illinois.
- State-specific background checks as applicable.
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start.
- Annual fit mask (N95) testing required; must be able to shave facial hair if needed for proper fit.
- Negative TB screening (2-step PPD or equivalent) within 12 months of start or chest x-ray if history positive. Annual TB questionnaire required.
- Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (vaccines or positive titers or medical exemption).
- Tdap vaccine or declination required (expires every 10 years).
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Sept 30 - April 1).
- Drug screening within 1 year of start, covering a comprehensive panel including amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, and others; must remain valid throughout assignment.
Competency & Skills Verification
- Unit-specific competency exams required annually, including dysrhythmia/EKG competency with minimum 80% pass rate.
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required.
- Color blindness testing within 12 months of start.
- Unit-specific skills checklist required within 1 year of start. Oncology skills checklist required if assigned to oncology units.
Additional Requirements
- Two professional references required; supervisors preferred within the last year.
- Employment application must be submitted and uploaded for facility review.
- Various facility-specific documents must be completed prior to start, including:
- HIPAA Acknowledgement
- Latex Allergy Questionnaire
- Confidentiality Form
- Regulatory Compliance Education (annual quiz with 80% passing score)
- Hand Hygiene, Fingernail, and Dress Code Policies acknowledgment
- Badge photo (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months)
- Orientation and training modules (~16 hours) must be completed through the facility’s learning platform prior to start.

- This is a float pool position requiring flexibility to work across multiple units and campuses.
- First-time travel nurses are accepted.
