Registered Nurse (RN) – Pediatrics / Medical-Surgical Telemetry (MST)
Location: Prescott Valley, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days
Hours per Day: 12
Hours per Week: 36
Unit Overview
- Mixed unit caring for both adult and pediatric patients; patient ratio varies with sometimes more adults than pediatrics.
- Pediatric / MST unit has 10 beds.
- Patient ratios: Pediatrics 1:3-4, MST 1:5.
- Float to MST unit on Emergency Care to care for adult MST patients if pediatric/MST census drops.
- Float to Medical Care Unit (MCU) and birthing unit (mom-baby couplets); Labor and Delivery float possible if experienced.
- Charge Nurse oversees 50 inpatient beds including MST, Pediatrics, and MCU (which admits ICU/PCU/MST patients).
Patient Types and Common Diagnoses
- Surgical: Total hip & knee replacement, small bowel resection, hysterectomy, exploratory laparoscopy.
- Medical: MRSA, C-diff infections, COPD, pneumonia, COVID-19.
- Telemetry: Chest pain.
- Pediatrics: Respiratory illnesses (RSV, Influenza, COVID), chronic seizures, dehydration, appendectomy, failure to thrive (med-surg level pediatric patients).
- No feeding tubes, tracheostomies, or ventilators on unit; assist to stabilize patients for transfer if needed.
- Care for stable adult patients requiring BiPAP or high flow oxygen to stabilize for transfer.
Required Certifications & Exams
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- Must pass dysrhythmia exam with a minimum score of 80% within two attempts prior to contract signing. Failure results in a 6-month disqualification from this and a related facility.
Experience & Skills
- Experience working with children is required.
- Must be willing and able to care for both adult and pediatric patients.
- Strong nursing skills preferred; permanent staff may have less experience (e.g., new grads or nurses returning to acute care).
- No requirement for RNs to titrate drips.
- RNs must be able to read telemetry strips for adult MST patients.
- Remote Monitor Techs available; bedside monitors used for pediatric patients.
Staffing & Support
- Nurse Aides (NAs) typically care for 10 patients; if no NA, RN cares for 3 patients.
- Provides primary nursing care.
- Respiratory Therapy equipment includes BiPAP, CPAP, vents; nurses assist with high flow oxygen stabilization.
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- 12-hour shifts: 07:00–19:00 or 19:30–07:30.
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Friday & Saturday nights; Saturday & Sunday days).
- Holiday rotation to distribute holidays fairly.
- Standby/call rotation during low census periods.
- Dress code: Navy scrubs.
Orientation & Additional Requirements
- Attend hospital and unit-specific orientation based on experience.
- Orientation includes End of Week (EOW) days and first float assignments.
- Must have adult MST telemetry experience.
- Radius rule: candidates must not have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN within the past year at any associated facilities within 50 miles.

This role requires a versatile RN comfortable with both pediatric and adult patients in a mixed medical-surgical telemetry setting. Strong pediatric experience, required certifications, and the ability to pass a dysrhythmia exam are essential. The position involves floating to multiple units and working 12-hour day shifts with weekend and holiday rotations.
