Registered Nurse (Stepdown Unit) - Morgantown, West Virginia
Position Details
- Specialty: Stepdown (8 Southeast)
- Unit Beds: 32
- Shift: Nights
- Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Weekend Requirement: 3 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule (Saturday, Sunday, Saturday)
- Holiday Requirement: Required to work holidays if needed
- Call/Standby: No call or standby required
- Floating: Very rare
Unit Environment
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Stepdown assignments: 1:3
- Combo assignments (stepdown + floor patients): 1:4 (e.g., 2 stepdown & 2 floor patients or 3 stepdown & 1 floor)
- Charge Nurse and House Supervisors present (1 Charge Nurse, 3 House Supervisors per shift)
- CNA support: 3-4 CNAs per shift
- Respiratory equipment: No ventilators; BiPAP and tracheostomies present
- Telemetry:
- RNs interpret and chart patient rhythms every 4 hours or more frequently during medication titration
- Centralized monitors at nurse stations and in patient rooms
- Centralized telemetry team interprets and files EKG strips
Patient Population
- Post-surgical thoracic and medical patients
Required Skills and Experience
- Strong MedSurg Stepdown experience
- Ability to titrate drips and read cardiac strips
- Drips commonly titrated: Cardizem, Amiodarone, Dopamine, Nitro, Esmolol, Heparin, Lasix (no vasopressors)
- Titration orders placed by MD
Required Certifications and Licenses
- Registered Nurse (RN) license
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification
- NIHSS certification
Orientation and Dress Code
- Unit-specific orientation: 3 shifts (12-hour night shifts including weekends and holidays as scheduled)
- Dress code: Royal Blue scrubs
Additional Requirements and Notes
- COVID-19 vaccine required (2 doses Moderna or Pfizer, or 1 dose J&J) unless approved exemption for medical or religious reasons
- Driver’s license address must be outside a 50-mile radius from the facility
- Previous permanent candidates must have been gone for 2 years before reapplying
- Previous travelers must have been gone for 2 years after completing 1 full year on the unit
- Submission rules apply regarding candidate submissions and travel teams (not relevant for candidate consideration)
