Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – Trauma & General Surgery Inpatient Unit

Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Day: 12
Hours per Week: 36


Unit Overview

  • 33-bed Trauma and General Surgery inpatient unit with both step-down and floor patients
  • Nationally recognized Comprehensive Bariatric Surgery Center
  • Patient types include multi-trauma, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), fractures, general surgery (cholecystectomy, ostomies), bariatric surgery, and other medical-surgical conditions
  • Fast-paced, high-impact environment requiring critical thinking and advanced nursing skills
  • Collaborative work with care management, surgical, medical, rehabilitation, and perioperative services

Patient Ratios

  • Floor patients (med-surg): 1:6
  • Step-down patients: 1:3

Required Experience & Skills

  • Level 1 trauma experience required
  • Experience with complex wound care, drains, devices, traumatic injuries, chest tubes, respiratory support, TBI, and complex spinal cord injuries
  • Must have experience working with both floor and step-down patient care
  • Must have Epic electronic health record experience (deal breaker)

Certifications & Licenses

  • Current BLS certification required
  • Valid RN license for the state of West Virginia

Clinical & Technical Details

  • Nurses must be able to read and validate cardiac monitor strips (monitor techs assist but RN validation required)
  • Common drips on floor: Heparin, PCA’s
  • Common drips on step-down: Insulin, Cardizem (non-pressor drips)
  • Respiratory therapy available 24/7 for stable/chronic ventilator patients
  • Floating to similar units (floor/step-down) required

Staffing & Support

  • Clinical Associates (nurse aides) present, typically 4 when fully staffed
  • Budgeted free charge nurse 24/7; house supervisor available

Scheduling & Work Requirements

  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 2 weekends per 4-week schedule
  • Holiday shifts scheduled as needed, integrated with permanent staff
  • Scrub color: Royal Blue

Additional Notes

  • Drivers license address must be outside a 50-mile radius from the facility to qualify
  • Previous permanent candidates must have been off for 2 years before reapplying
  • Previous travelers must have been off for 2 years after completing a full year on the unit
  • Travel teams must be submitted together
  • Only 2 candidates submitted per opening; submissions may be held if position is full
