Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse

Location: Dothan, Alabama
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Day shift, 4 shifts of 12 hours (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: Orthopedic with Medical-Surgical and Telemetry overflow
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6 to 1:7
  • Must be proficient in managing cardiac drips including Cardizem, Tridil, and Amiodarone
  • Block scheduling may be accommodated
  • No local candidates within 90 miles accepted
  • Previous permanent staff at this facility are ineligible for travel assignments for 10 years

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Alabama
  • Minimum of 1 year of Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience within the last year
  • BLS certification issued by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association
  • Current NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Proficient in managing IV cardiac drips including Cardizem, Tridil, and Amiodarone
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License (name must match RN license)
  • Social Security Card or confirmation of last four digits of SSN
  • Background checks including:
    • 7-year criminal history check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
    • Sex offender registry
    • Education verification
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • NURSYS license verification required
  • Facility-specific modules must be completed prior to orientation (deadline: Friday before start)
  • APS Registry Clearance Form (Alabama Shirley’s Law) must be hand-signed and completed prior to orientation
  • Proof of 2 clinical references within the last 12 months (up to 18 months if necessary)
  • Completed employment application/resume
  • Skills checklist updated annually for applicable units
  • HIPAA attestation and competency exams required (Core Exams I-III preferred)
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands (initial and annual)
  • Negative TB test (PPD, Quantiferon Gold, or T-spot) within 1 year or clear chest X-ray if previously positive
  • TB questionnaire required for all candidates
  • Annual fit mask test (specific approved mask models only)
  • 10-panel drug test within 90 days of start, updated annually (instant/rapid tests not accepted)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required for placements starting on or after September 15; no declinations accepted (medical/religious exemptions allowed with facility form; mask required if exempt)
  • COVID-19 vaccination is voluntary

Additional Notes

  • Candidate must live at least 90 miles from the facility
  • Photo for badge required within 72 hours of signing contract (passport-style, no nose rings)
  • Facility requires exact name match on all documents (Driver’s License, Social Security Card, RN license)
  • Previous permanent staff at this facility are not eligible for travel assignments for 10 years
  • Facility will provide NIH Stroke Scale training after candidate is cleared to start
