Description
Travel Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: 12-hour nights (18:45 - 7:15)
- Hours per week: 48 (36 or 48 hours accepted; no OT billed until after 48 hours)
- Patient Ratios: 1:6-7 (must be comfortable with these ratios)
- Floating: Required to similar units and alternate care locations including inpatient holding
- Weekend Requirement: Assigned every other weekend
- Disaster Response: Expected to work on Storm/Hurricane Teams and may be required to report during catastrophic events or mass casualty incidents
- Unit Orientation: 12-hour unit orientation plus 16 hours of organizational education
- Scrubs: Navy color required
- Systems Used: Pyxis, EPIC, SBAR
- Patient Diagnoses: Severe bone/joint/soft tissue injuries, traumatic brain injuries, spine injuries, neurological trauma, subdural hematoma
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, with at least 1 year within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system
- PICC line management
- Management of dysrhythmias
- Ability to manage heparin drips
- Non-invasive airway management
- Tracheostomy management
- Experience caring for patients with traumatic brain injury
- Experience with orthopedic trauma
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Dysrhythmia interpretation
- Pre/Post hemodialysis management
- Management of drips
- Care for CVA, pre/post neurosurgery, spinal cord injuries
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background check within 6 months for clinical candidates
- Drug screening (9-panel, within 6 months)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year (or documentation of past positive)
- Immunizations: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (per current standards)
- Physical exam (per travel agency standards)
- Medication safety training certificate (must be completed and submitted)
- Annual flu vaccination or approved exemption with mask requirement
- Photo for badge (passport style, solid white background, business attire, no head coverings except glasses)
- Completion of required facility-specific education modules and orientation checklists
- Competency exams including dysrhythmia/EKG (must score 82% or higher)
- Various facility-specific agreements and acknowledgments (confidentiality, tobacco-free campus, hospital policies)
Additional Notes
- RTO (Request Time Off) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs may lead to cancellation
- Candidates must be comfortable with the patient acuity and unit expectations
- Candidates will be preassigned to units as needed and may be consolidated to a centralized office mid-contract
- Must comply with all facility policies and complete all required training and documentation by deadlines to avoid start delays
This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity medical surgical unit with diverse patient needs and requires strong clinical skills, flexibility, and commitment to facility protocols.
