Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – MS/Telemetry Float Pool

Location: Garden City, Kansas
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Float pool position covering multiple units within a 60-mile radius zone around Garden City, KS.
  • Units include Medical-Surgical Telemetry (MS-Tele) and specialties such as Cardiac, Neuro, Oncology, Rehab, Renal, Bariatrics, Orthopedics, Trauma, and Emergency Department Observation.
  • No home base facility; floating required across multiple hospitals within the zone.
  • Schedule released 4–6 weeks in advance with two formats:
    • Assigned to a single facility for the week with possible intra-facility floating.
    • Just-In-Time (JIT) assignments given 1–2 hours before shift start.
  • Night shifts, 12 hours each, approximately 36 hours per week.
  • Weekend commitment: 6–9 weekend shifts in a 6-week schedule.
  • May be required to participate in holiday rotation.
  • Rare call or standby requirements.

Patient Population & Care

  • Adult to geriatric patients with diagnoses including:
    • Cardiac, Neurology, Orthopedics, Oncology, Renal, Urology (post-surgical), General Surgery (post-appendectomy), Gynecology, Psychiatry/Detox, ENT, General Medicine, and stable long-term placements.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:5-6 depending on acuity.
  • Charge nurse designated on each unit; usually does not take patient assignments except when necessary.
  • Nurse aids available on units.
  • Respiratory therapy equipment present (ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP).
  • RNs responsible for titrating heparin drips.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical Telemetry nursing experience within the last 3 years.
  • Preferred experience in neurology.
  • Preferred experience with Alaris infusion pumps and EPIC electronic health record system.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications (American Heart Association).
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required.
  • Must be able to float across multiple facilities within the 60-mile zone.
  • Must be in-state for the week of orientation (orientation may include remote modules but requires physical presence).
  • All time-off requests must be submitted before assignment start.

Additional Information

  • Floating includes potential assignments to ICU (low acuity holds within skillset), Progressive Care Unit/Stepdown, and MS-Tele units.
  • Housing must be arranged to allow feasible travel within the 60-mile zone.
  • Interview process involves a candidate interview and a clinical team interview; no unit manager involvement.

This position is ideal for experienced MS-Telemetry RNs comfortable with floating across multiple specialties and facilities within a defined geographic zone, working night shifts, and managing a diverse adult patient population.
