Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel/Contract
Location: Overland Park, Kansas
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Position: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Registered Nurse
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 7:15)
- Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 5 patients
- Float Pool Role: No home unit; float between approximately 5 Med/Surg Intermediate/PCU units and other metro campuses as needed
- Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday, Saturday, Sunday combination)
- Holiday shifts and Charge RN assignments as needed
- Locals accepted within local radius
- No on-call required
- No block scheduling accommodation
- Guaranteed minimum: 3 shifts per 13 weeks
Required Experience & Skills
- Valid Registered Nurse license in Kansas
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- Experience in MedSurg/Telemetry (MS/Tele) work settings
- Cardiac telemetry experience including management of dysrhythmias
- Experience with pre/post cardiac catheterization care
- Experience managing renal failure and stroke patients
- Experience with blood product administration and accessing ports
- Experience managing alcohol withdrawal (ETOH) and suicidal ideation (SI)
- Telemetry experience
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Certifications & Licenses
- Required:
- Registered Nurse license valid in Kansas
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Preferred:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- Other certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., MAB, CPI, TNCC, EFM) — verify with unit-specific requirements
Compliance & Background Requirements
- Government-issued ID required
- Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Education verification of highest nursing degree required before start
- Fingerprinting required for assignments involving long-term care or rehab units in Illinois
- State-specific background checks as applicable (Missouri and Illinois)
- Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include comprehensive panel (amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Fit mask (N95) testing required annually
- Immunizations/vaccinations or documented immunity required for:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (every 10 years)
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (positive titer, vaccination, or medical exemption)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption during flu season (Sept-April)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year of start, with yearly TB questionnaire
- Hepatitis B declination form required (vaccination not mandatory)
Competency & Documentation Requirements
- Unit-specific competency exams required annually, including dysrhythmia/EKG competency with minimum 80% pass rate
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required
- Skills checklist specific to unit required within 1 year of start
- Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
- Employment application must be submitted and uploaded
- Facility-specific documents required prior to start:
- Photo for badge (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months)
- HIPAA acknowledgement
- Latex allergy questionnaire
- Confidentiality form
- Regulatory compliance education quiz (annual, 80% passing score)
- Hand hygiene, fingernail, and dress code policy acknowledgements
- Orientation modules completion (approx. 16 hours)
Additional Notes
- No pending licenses accepted
- Return-to-office restrictions: no more than 7 days
- Virtual nursing skills and equipment knowledge preferred (12 lead EKG, AirVo, Voalte, Omnicell)
- Candidate must be willing and able to float within scope of practice across multiple units and campuses
