Description

Registered Nurse – Medical Oncology (Travel/Contract)

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work on a medical oncology unit caring for adult and geriatric patients with solid tumor cancers (e.g., breast, lung, prostate, pancreatic, colon, esophageal cancers).
  • Patient care spans from new diagnosis through treatment and end-of-life care.
  • Staffing ratios aim for 1:4, occasionally 1:5.
  • Shift options: Day (3 shifts of 12 hours, 7:00 AM–7:30 PM) or Night (3 shifts of 12 hours, 7:00 PM–7:30 AM).
  • Orientation: First week is Monday–Friday day shifts; second week includes 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
  • Floating to other MedSurg Oncology units is required.
  • Self-scheduling requests are submitted for preferred scheduling but no set/blocked schedules are offered.
  • Weekends vary based on unit needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
  • Minimum 2 years of telemetry experience, with telemetry experience within the last year.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous travel nursing experience preferred but not required.

Patient Population & Diagnoses

  • Adults and geriatrics.
  • Common diagnoses include all subtypes of breast, lung, prostate, pancreatic, colon, and esophageal cancers, as well as encounters for antineoplastic chemotherapy.
  • Patients may have concurrent medical-surgical issues.

Technology & Documentation

  • Electronic charting using EPIC system.

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year or chest x-ray if positive. Annual TB questionnaire required.
  • Immunizations/vaccinations required:
    • Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12).
    • 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for measles, mumps, and rubella (with booster requirements if low titers).
    • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable).
    • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions require documentation).
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1–3/31).
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending results allowed).
  • Fit mask testing required annually for inpatient/patient-facing roles; onsite fit testing available if needed.
  • COVID vaccination not required but strongly recommended.

  • Annual review and acknowledgment of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies.
  • Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
  • Background check and fingerprinting results must be clear prior to start; pending fingerprint attestations accepted under specific conditions.
  • Employment application and skills checklist required.

Work Environment

  • Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention.
  • Unit cares for patients throughout all stages of cancer care.
  • Floating to other oncology med-surg units expected.

Parking

  • Various parking permit options available for agency staff (costs and availability subject to change).
