Description
Registered Nurse – PCU (Travel/Contract)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Unit & Patient Population
- Mixed acuity surgical oncology unit caring for PCU and Med Surg patients
- Patient age groups: Adults and Geriatrics
- Patient diagnoses include:
- Surgical Oncology (breast, thyroid, melanoma)
- Hepatobiliary cancers (liver, pancreas, spleen, biliary tract, neuroendocrine)
- Colorectal cancers (colon, rectal)
- Plastics (reconstructive breast cancer, sarcoma)
Work Schedule & Staffing
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (19:00–7:30)
- Staffing ratio goal: 1 nurse to 4 patients, can be up to 1:5
- Rotating shifts possible (days, nights, or combination) based on unit needs
- No set/blocked scheduling; schedule reviewed every 4 weeks but subject to change
- Travelers may be required to float within their scope of practice
- Self-scheduling requests are submitted but final schedule is balanced by management
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday–Friday day shift orientation
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS)
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification
Required Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – AHA only (Instructor/Provider and RQI acceptable)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – AHA only
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS)
- Computerized charting experience with EPIC system
Preferred Certifications
- Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy Certification (ONS Chemo)
Clinical Skills & Procedures
- Chemotherapy administration
- Blood transfusions
- IV antibiotics
- Management of oncologic emergencies including cytokine release syndrome
- Insulin and heparin drips
- Strong focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
Licensure
- Must hold an active Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Ohio
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific code 3701.881)
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
- Monthly monitoring through workforce compliance systems
- Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending at start
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending drug screens allowed)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Annual compliance with facility dress code and hand hygiene policies
- Annual acknowledgment of Confidential Fraud Waste Abuse and Compliance Reporting policies
- Annual Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required (must be completed prior to start or within 90 days)
- Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgment
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year or chest x-ray if positive
- Annual TB questionnaire in lieu of annual TB test renewal
- Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12) required; exemptions not allowed if working with infants or pregnant patients
- 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, and Rubella; boosters required if low titer
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (signed declination acceptable)
- Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions require documentation
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1–3/31); mask required if declining
- COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended
- Annual fit mask testing required for inpatient/patient-facing roles starting 7/13/2026; onsite fit testing available if needed
References & Documentation
- Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership (charge RN acceptable as second)
