Description
Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Travel/Contract)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Night shift (12-hour shifts, 18:45 – 07:15), 36 or 48 hours per week accepted
- Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6-7
- Charge nurse role required for night travelers
- Floating to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatient holding required
- Assigned to every other weekend and must work holidays
- May care for COVID-19 patients
- Assigned to Inclement Weather Team and Storm/Hurricane Team; may be required to report during catastrophic events or disasters
- Patient population: Adults and geriatrics, general medical/surgical patients, daily census ~43
- Special procedures include insulin and heparin drips, wound vac dressing changes, high flow oxygen, occasional short-term BiPAP respiratory support (no additional training needed)
- No PCU level patients on this unit
- Unit systems: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR communication
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system
Orientation & Training
- Unit orientation: 24 hours
- Must attend monthly unit team meetings (scheduled monthly, with additional meetings for night shift staff)
- Must complete facility-specific education modules and compliance training as required
- Must complete medication safety training and other required facility education prior to or during assignment
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (for North Carolina travel candidates)
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- Call required if assigned to prescheduled call shifts
- Must be able to float to similar units and alternate care locations
- Must be able to work holidays and every other weekend
- RTO (request time off) after booking is not allowed onsite; excessive call-offs or RTO may lead to cancellation
- May be consolidated to centralized office mid-contract and reassigned as needed
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start (or proof of past positive with appropriate documentation)
- Required immunizations or titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months of start
- Physical exam not required for crisis travelers
- Must complete background checks and verifications as required
- Must complete color blindness testing within 1 year prior to start
- Must complete medication/pharmacology competency exam and other competency exams as required
- Must complete annual flu vaccination or approved exemption with mask-wearing requirement
- Must complete confidentiality agreement, hospital policies acknowledgment, and other facility-specific documents
Documentation & Compliance
- Required documents include:
- Photo ID (passport-style photo on white background for badge)
- Background check within 6 months for clinical candidates
- Education verification for highest degree earned
- References or performance evaluations as applicable
- Drug screen and immunization records
- Signed job description and confidentiality agreement
- Proof of completion of required training modules and certifications
Additional Notes
- Scrubs: Navy color, not provided by facility
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced, general medical/surgical environment with adult and geriatric patients
- May be required to respond to inclement weather and disaster situations as part of the Storm/Hurricane Team
- Must be flexible with floating and scheduling needs based on unit requirements
This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with solid medical-surgical experience, EPIC proficiency, and the ability to work nights, holidays, and weekends in a dynamic hospital environment. Prior travel experience is not required.
