Description
Registered Nurse – Emergency Department
Location: Prescott Valley, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Emergency Department with 24 beds, including 4 critical rooms and 1 trauma room (Level 4 trauma center)
- Treats approximately 80-110 patients per day
- Separate triage area where travelers may triage if able to demonstrate competency
- Separate psych/seclusion rooms available (2 rooms)
- Security present 24/7 with one staff member in the ED and one roving campus-wide
Patient Care & Staffing
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- General ED: 1:4
- ICU in ED: 1:2 or 1:1 depending on acuity
- ED Techs support nursing with IV skills, phlebotomy, splinting, wound care, transport, and special procedures (ratio approx. 1:10-12)
- Paramedics staffed daily (1100-2300) in intake area, able to administer 12 medications and discharge patients
- Respiratory Therapists (RT) available hospital-wide, report to ED for intubation, vent setup, BiPAP, Vapotherm, ABGs; RNs troubleshoot respiratory equipment and call RT for issues
- RNs read their own telemetry strips; all beds have telemetry monitor capability
Common Patient Diagnoses & Procedures
- Chest pain, abdominal pain, minor trauma, respiratory distress
- Conscious sedation and critical thinking skills required
- Management of acute myocardial infarction (AMI)
- Common drips and emergency interventions under physician/mid-level provider supervision (1 MD 24/7, 1-2 mid-levels during peak hours)
Certifications & Experience Requirements
- Valid RN license in Arizona
- Minimum 2 years Emergency Department nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Required Certifications: ACLS, BLS, TNCC, ENPC or PALS
- Conscious sedation experience
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Night shift, 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
- No self-scheduling; block scheduling allowed with a maximum of 4 consecutive shifts
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (day shifts on Sat/Sun, night shifts on Fri/Sat)
- Holiday requirement: must work some major holidays (July 4th, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve/Day, New Year’s Eve/Day) – negotiable
- One on-call shift per 28-day schedule (day shift covers day call; mid and night shifts cover night call)
- Floating between east and west ED units, generally prescheduled
- Dress code: navy blue dignity scrubs
Orientation
- Two-day hospital orientation
- One 12-hour shift orientation in each ED unit (east and west) with a mentor
- Orientation includes day, evening, and night shifts and first float assignment
Additional Notes
- Charge nurse and house supervisor present 24/7; charge nurse generally does not take patient assignments
- X-ray and CT available adjacent to ED; transports handle their own patients
- Phlebotomy performed by both RNs and dedicated phlebotomists depending on situation
- Monitor techs present; RNs responsible for reading telemetry strips and recognizing abnormalities
