Description

Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Night Shift)

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Primarily caring for medical-surgical patients with oncology history.
  • Patient diagnoses include AKI, Sepsis, Cancer, Septic shock, Malignant Neoplasms, ARF, Encephalopathy, Diabetic foot ulcers, and more.
  • Administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy (IV, PO, or injection) may be required.
  • Typical patient-to-nurse ratio: 1:6 (may increase during high census).
  • Shift: Nights (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 18:45 to 7:15).
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend required.
  • Call Requirement: Must be available for call if called off on a prescheduled shift.
  • Float Requirement: Floating to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations (e.g., inpatient holding in the ED) is required.
  • Storm/Hurricane Team: Contract staff may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters and may be preassigned to different units as needed.
  • Attendance to monthly staff meetings is required.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg nursing experience, with Med/Surg experience within the last year
  • Experience in an inpatient setting
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Skills and clinical experience including:
    • Colostomy care
    • Blood product administration
    • Central line blood draws
    • PICC line management
    • Management of surgical drains
    • Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)

Orientation & Unit Details

  • Orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts).
  • Daily census: Approximately 42 patients.
  • Unit systems: PYXIS (medication), EPIC (documentation), SBAR (communication).
  • Scrubs: Navy blue and white.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background check within 6 months required for clinical candidates.
  • Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months of start.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year; additional documentation required if past positive.
  • Required immunizations/vaccinations: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella. Declinations require appropriate documentation.
  • Physical exam and references required per travel agency standards.
  • Mandatory completion of facility-specific education modules and compliance training.
  • Photo for badge required immediately after signing contract (passport-style photo on white background).
  • Must complete medication safety training and confidentiality agreement.
  • Must complete annual flu vaccination or approved exemption with mask-wearing requirement.
  • Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (for North Carolina travel candidates).
  • Must complete annual compliance and facility-specific mandatory education.
  • Must complete Corp ID setup and I-Learn login within 24 hours of receiving credentials to avoid start delays.

Additional Notes

  • No return-to-office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation.
  • Shifts called out must be made up with rescheduled shifts.
  • Contract staff will be assigned equally with home unit staff to ensure patient coverage.
  • Radiation badges are not required for this role.
