Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Travel/Contract)
Location: Randallstown, Maryland
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Unit: 3C/3D Surgical Orthopedics Med-Surg
- Patient Population:
- Medical-Surgical and Post-Operative patients admitted from the Emergency Department
- General medical patients from the ED
- Surgical Patients include:
- General surgery: appendectomy, cholecystectomy, colorectal surgeries, small bowel obstructions, below-knee and above-knee amputations
- Orthopedics: knee, hip, and shoulder replacements, spine surgery, limb lengthening
- Bariatrics, plastics, and urology patients
- Documentation system: Cerner
- Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
- Total hours per week: 36
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse license valid in Maryland
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience in the specialty (Medical-Surgical/Orthopedics)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
- First-time travel nurses accepted (prior travel experience not required)
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID) required; temporary paper receipt accepted only as placeholder until official ID is received
- Background check within 6 months covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years; includes SS trace, counties, nationwide, sex offender, FACIS Level 3, education verification, and international searches if applicable
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required
- Education verification required; nursing education program must be approved by Maryland Board of Nursing if completed out-of-state
- NURSYS primary source verification required for RN license
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming ability to meet essential job functions
- Negative TB test (PPD, GOLD, or TSPOT) or chest X-ray within 1 year; pending TB results allowed if confirmed completed
- Annual TB questionnaire required
- Immunizations/vaccinations required:
- 2 MMR vaccines or positive titer (boosters required if negative)
- Hepatitis B titer, series, or signed declination
- 2 Varicella vaccines or positive titer (boosters required if negative)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption during flu season (Oct 1 – Mar 31)
- Negative 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (instant screen accepted as placeholder)
- Respirator fit test completed onsite (not required for non-clinical staff)
Certifications and Competencies
- ACLS and BLS certifications must be current and from AHA or accepted equivalent (e.g., RQI)
- Unit-specific competency exams required, including medication/pharmacology competency and dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (Relias or Prophecy platforms only)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG exam must be passed within 3 attempts (2 attempts for some facilities); remediation required if failed first attempt
- Stroke and trauma CEUs may be required depending on unit; stroke CEUs must be completed prior to or within one week of start; trauma CEUs required after 27 weeks of work and renewed annually
- Acknowledgement of pass/fail testing required for RNs
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification may be required based on unit
Facility-Specific Requirements
- Badge photo required for facility ID
- Completion and signing of parking registration, attendance policy, floating policy, and consent to release information forms prior to start
- ReadySet account setup and completion of health assessment surveys required before orientation
- EKG study guides provided to prepare for dysrhythmia exam
- Work history verification or professional references required (2 references within 2 years preferred)
- Employment application required
Additional Notes
- Labs (including immunizations and drug screen) must be completed by the Monday prior to start to ensure on-time reporting
- Medical and religious exemptions for vaccines must be approved by employer
- Candidate can start with some pending verifications (e.g., education verification, TB results, stroke CEUs) if documentation is in process and confirmed
- Facility uses Cerner for documentation and requires adherence to their policies and procedures
