Registered Nurse - Labor & Delivery
Location
- Wichita, Kansas
Employment Type
- Travel contract
- Contract length: 13 weeks
Unit Information
- Unit: Birth Care Suites (separate building from main hospital)
- Beds: 20 LDRP, 2 operating rooms
- Staff per shift:
- Day: 1 charge nurse, 7 RNs, 1 surgical tech, 1 admissions control tech
- Night: 1 charge nurse, 5 RNs, 1 surgical tech, 1 admissions control tech
- Patient ratios:
- Labor: 1-2 patients per nurse
- Postpartum: 3-4 patients per nurse
- Equipment: GE fetal monitor, Monica Novii, Alaris pumps
- EMR systems: CPN and Meditech
- Scheduling: 3 shifts per week, 12-hour shifts (7 PM - 7 AM)
- Floating: Within Women’s units as needed
- Patient care approach: 1:1 labor support, active labor positioning, continuity of care from labor through postpartum
- Patient criteria: Patients must be >37 weeks gestational age and low risk to deliver at this unit
- Delivery volume: Approximately 110-130 births per month at this unit
- Cesarean section rate: Less than 10%
- Team: Dedicated anesthesia team for women’s services, 24/7 hospitalist coverage, teaching hospital with residents
- Culture: High teamwork, tenured nursing staff, strong patient experience and employee engagement scores
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Kansas
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 1 year of Labor and Delivery experience within the last year
- Acute Care experience
- Certifications: ACLS, BLS, NRP, AWHONN
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with OR circulating
- Labor positioning techniques (e.g., Spinning Babies)
- Managing obstetric emergencies
Procedures Performed
- Vaginal deliveries
- Cesarean sections
- Non-stress tests (NSTs)
- Circumcisions
Additional Notes
- Nurse leader rounding and bedside shift reports are standard practice to ensure quality patient care
- The unit values strong communication skills with staff and providers
- The Birth Care Suites offers a less hospital-like birthing experience with a focus on patient comfort and support
